KEI Observations for Affiliate Marketers - April 29
KEI Observation Deck - April 29
By John Alexander of Search Engine Workshops
We know that people use the major search engines every day as a tool to research a multitude of interests. The key to great Internet marketing is understanding the demand for information and being able to also determine where the best "windows of opportunity" are for keyword phrases which are being searched on major engines. Ideally, you want phrases in fair to high use, but with low competition counts.
Solid keyword research mixed with SEO skills is your key to great Internet Marketing. Just so you know, our definition of SEO is not about trying to gain visibility by "tricking" or "fooling" the search engines. There is NEVER any need to try to fool search engines. Instead, we teach our students how to build true relevency into their pages of valuable content. All you are really doing is researching what a marketplace of searchers want, then you are helping them find what they are looking for. All that any search engine really wants to provide, are relevant search results for searchers. All any searcher really wants, is valuable information on the topic of which they are seeking.
Using a tool like Wordtracker can be your "window on the world" of your ideal audience's searching behaviours. The challenge is to move beyond "keyword research" and explore the realm of "search behavior."
I describe my favourite methods for performing Wordtracker Magic in my e-book of the same name.
KEI means "Keyword Effectiveness Index."
For the sake of today's observations, I'll explain that a KEI value of 100 can represent a fair phrase. A KEI value of 400 or higher can represent and excellent phrase. The principle is simple. The higher the KEI value, the more often you find phrases with huge "windows of opportunity." By this I mean HIGH usage and LOW competition. The strength of Wordtracker is that you can use it to tap into extraordinary phrases with high KEI values much higher than 400.
Wordtracker Magic is my simple system by which I show you how to extract huge KEI values from Wordtracker's member area (Yes, you need to be a member of Wordtracker to do this), but you'll find some wonderful trends often in just minutes. With practice, you can gain insights sometimes in just seconds.
Each day, I write a few KEI keyword observations that I pick up in usually 3 to 5 minutes. Today, I took a little longer (14 minutes) but here are just a few observations which you can take advantadge of courtsey of Wordtracker and Search Engine Workshops.
Okay, on with the KEI Observation Deck for April 29
Of possible interest to affiliate marketers?
"sharp fax refills" KEI 1420.4
"hellboy toys statues" KEI 1320.0
Now let's voyage on into the interest of phrases related to coupons:
Check out some of these KEI values!
"Babies R Us coupons" KEI 251.0
"Babies R US in Store Coupons" KEI 6883.5
"Toys R Us coupons" KEI 448.00
"National Rent-a-Car coupons" KEI 5229.8
"Saks Fifth Avenue coupons" KEI 5562.4
(Only 58 competing pages for this exact phrase!)
"Bloomingdales coupons" KEI 11203.0
(Only 39 competing pages!)
These are only a handful of observations based on coupon related
phrases that I spotted in just seconds. There are at least 25 of
them with KEI values well into the hundreds and even thousands.
Drop by Wordtracker and check them out for yourself!
Okay, now we'll shift gears and explore a few behaviors based on
questions that people want answered. Perhaps you have solutions
for these audiences.
Here's just a few observations people seem
to want to know about:
"When Will I Receive My Tax Refund" KEI 611.0
"When Does Daylight Savings Time Occur" KEI 6533.0
"When Do We Put the Clocks Back" KEI 2422.5
For all of you historical interest optimizers:
"Why Was Alexander the Great So Great" KEI 1008.2
For any oceanographers:
"When Do Sharks Mate" KEI 7396.0
Okay, that's about it for today. Not bad I suppose, considering it took about 14 minutes of research. I hope you enjoyed the few observation posted today.
Finally, I'll just mention a few other quick resources:

KEI Observation Deck April 27
The single biggest struggle for many people is to learn to start "thinking laterally" about their target audiences behaviors. Instead of focusing on keywords....you have to focus on thinking about the searching "behaviour" of your ideal buying audience. It takes a little practice but once you are on to it, you get better and better at it.
What does your searching audience really want?
Okay, let's take a generic example like the word "book."
For example:
What type of Books are you selling?
"Book" or "books" are pretty broad based, generic terms.
Sometimes it only takes a little twist to find a niche with a
huge KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index)
So.....what type of books are we talking about? What type of information is in the books?
Math related books? Geometry? Multiplication, Subtraction?
Children's math?
Or are they history related books? What type of history? War related? Historical maps?
Or are the books containing lessons of some sort?
If so, what type of lessons? "How to" books?
Let's examine this aspect for just a second.
What type of lessons are people looking for (instead of just a generic term like "books?")
You see what I am am doing is getting much more specific to try and find a niche instead of just thinking in a broad generic term.
Here are just a couple of ideas I found on first try:
"Lessons for Making Inferences" KEI 6724.0
(Okay, this might be just a little weird)
"on line money lessons" KEI 3328.0
(Cool....someone wants to know how to make money online)
There are huge differences in little tiny changes.
For example the phrase "Christian book stores"
with a KEI of only 6.2 is a very weak KEI.
Instead, why not feature a specific book on spelling lessons for Christian's!
It's just a little different spin, but it's a nice KEI value.
Look at this phrase....
"Christian spelling lessons" KEI 1936.0
So what IF they (the lessons) just happen to be in a book that you buy online or in a store? So what? Somebody could still be making book sales, right? :o)
TIP:
Rather than build a Web site first, fill it with content, second and then try and perform SEO as a last stage effort, it is much easier to do it the other way around.
The whole strength of Wordtracker is in finding out what true niche's that the searching audience is truly after and then meeting those needs with the Web site content. For example, you could have a variety of pages attracting traffic for what people want to know, then sell them a book that delivers whatever that need is.
Quick check on synonyms? How about the term "booklet?"
It's not an action word but let's see what people are looking for?
Here is one that could be cool.
Have you got a book about "how to print color booklets?"
Or maybe an article promoting some book on the topic of color printing?
"printing color booklets" KEI 2888.0
Remember that you can optimize for low KEI terms too, but you need to do a more thorough job on the optimization if you are working with more competitive terms, that's the only thing.
Does your Web site suffer from obscurity in the search engine
rankings? Could your Web site benefit from a little lateral thinking
keyword research?
Here is a link with many free audio tips from me:
http://www.searchengineworkshops.com/articles/audiomagic.html
You will need a Wordtracker account though, in order to access the member data.
Also check out this page of Wordtracker related tutorials and articles.
Also, you may enjoy listening to this recent instructional interview I did on the e-Marketing Talk Show Radio:
http://www.searchengineworkshops.com/articles/talk-show.html
It's does take a little lateral thinking and some practice. But once you are on to it, it can open up a whole world of potential that many Webmasters probably seldom ever enjoy.
Don't be a stranger. Drop by again soon for some more high KEI observations from the friendly support team at Wordtracker.

KEI Observation Deck April 26
Welcome to a few observations and tips of keyword phrases with a KEI value (Keyword Effectiveness Index) of 400 or higher.
Here is the KEI Observation Deck for April 26
"Printable Children's Mazes" KEI 400.0
"Free Printable Things to Do List" KEI 1156.0
Okay, in the next 3 examples, can you guess what the root word was?
"sales ability tests" KEI 475.4
"sales management tests" KEI 680.3
"sales competency tests" KEI 1176.0
If you do not understand the power of working with root words you
might enjoy reading Wordtracker Magic.
The objective is to be able to dip into Wordtracker and quickly extract the best keyword phrase combinations on any topic, in just minutes. If you do not wish to purchase my book, then let me explain to you how it's done in just a few minutes for free.
Listen to my Wordtracker Magic audios right on your computer.
It's free!
Some of you may guess that the root word above, was "sales" but that would be incorrect. Actually it was the word "test" (singular)
TIP:
Did you know a singular term also pulls up powerful instances the the same term in plural? However, using a plural term could potentially leave out any existing opportunities in singular.

Wordtracker KEI Observation Deck April 14
Question:
"John, can I ask you what the mathematical formula for KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index" is?"
Thanks
J.B.
Answer:
Dear J.B.
The KEI equation was developed by a respected Search Engine Marketer by the name of Sumantra Roy, of 1st Search Ranking who has kindly allowed Wordtracker to incorporate the KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) into Wordtracker.
If you want a detailed breakdown of the equation, it is posted in the members area of Wordtracker, just click on any of the terms at the top of the chart for a detailed explanation which is quite technical for those of you who love mathematics.
John
In laymens terms, look for the keywords near the top. The higher the KEI value, the more popular your keywords are, and the less competition they will have. Which means you have a better chance of getting to the top with even just some very basic optimization.
KEI is not perfect, it is just a mathematical formula. But used to it's fullest effect, it is one of the most powerful keys to accessing the best information, in a lightning quick fashion.
The beauty of KEI when performing Wordtracker research is, that you can let it reveal to you, exactly what an audience is looking for. But more than this, it shows you extraordinary "windows of opportunity" that others may not know even exists. It also may show you how some people are trying optimize for tremendously competitive phrases (in some cases that hardly anyone is even searching for).
Wordtracker is your window on the world of public searching behaviors.
I don't have to tell most of our readers how big of a fan I am of Wordtracker because it's one of the biggest secrets to success. It's a major key to doing the job correctly, the first time.
You don't even need to understand mathematics to use it. What I encourage our students to do, is exercise their lateral thinking skills each time they go in searching for keywords. Begin to open up and expand to a fuller spectrum of examining search behaviors.
Follow the guidelines I give in my e-guide Wordtracker Magic and you can instantly tap into tremendous potential very quickily (in just minutes.) With a little practice, you'll be discovering all kinds of great things.

On the topic of SEO Certification Training
Recent comments from John Alexander -
About SEO Training and SEO certification:
"To be certified in any specific skill like 'search engine marketing' means that someone has had to have completed a "course of study" or training. Once completing a study course, they need to be examined and found competent that they understand and they have retained the skills they have learned.
A 'course of study' should not just be just any course of study, but it must come under the auspices of some recognized educational authority. With that, I would like to turn this conversation over to my partner in business, Robin Nobles. She is the very first person to ever develop a search engine training course to be both accepted and approved by the US educational system."
Comments by Robin Nobles on the Topic of SEO certification:
"There are many companies today that are offering courses of study in SEO or search engine marketing. However, there are a couple of considerations that I think are important to point out."
"Anyone can hang a sign on their virtual door stating that they're offering 'certification' in search engine optimization. But what does that really mean? Who is backing the certification?
"Our courses are backed by the United States educational system. All of our material, exams, and the education program itself has to be approved by the University. Our courses can even be taken for University CEUs. Our certification means something. We have a governing body looking over our shoulder."
"We have worked hard to ensure our students learn solid skills, and we expect that our SEO certification program will continue to be of high interest in the future and more important than ever, as business owners are seeking qualified talent."
Robin said, "Another question we feel students should ask is how the training firm they choose to learn from, is actually ranking in a competitive marketplace?"
This is essential because if a training organization cannot rank well for their own business, what is the value of their teaching methodologies, if they cannot demonstrate by example.
In closing the interview, Robin offered the following points you should consider when looking for a place where you gain a solid SEO training program and an SEO "certification of skills":
1. Choose a training course or a training organization that is already recognized and backed by an official educational authority.
Here are a few examples:
Search Engine Workshops
Search Engine Academy
Online SEO Training
All of these courses and workshops are recognized by the US Educational System.
2. Choose a training course based on some due diligence with other graduates. If they are benefiting from the course they studied and are happy with their results, chances are you will be too.
3. Choose a training course where they lead by example and are easily found for highly competitive terms.
We predict that true "SEO certification" and "re-certification" will become much more important to the business community and to everyone in the very near future.

Wordtracker Tip for April 7
When was the last time you used Wordtracker's Top 1000 short term report as a quick check on the interests in the searching world?
The difference in the Top 1000 Long Term report and the Top 1000 short term report is that the Long Term examines popular keywords within the last 60 days, but the short term is generally reflecting interests within the last 24 hours.
The short term report can show direct relation responses to world events (particularly news). From time to time you may see some interesting items here, then if you are curious, you can go search in Google or Yahoo news, to find out what's happening.
EXAMPLE: A few days ago, it was no surprise to see the Pope's name in number 1 spot at news of his passing.
Today, you note that news anchor "Peter Jennings" name is in number 4 spot on the short term repot.
This is in reflection of Peter Jennings, at the end of his broadcast on Tuesday, told his audience about his diagnosis of Cancer.
Other observations in the short term report may reflect news of a new product being launched or some issue in the news.
For example, why are people searching for information on Marilyn Monroe in the last 24 hours. A quick check on Google news feeds reveals the headline that: Never before published photos of Marilyn Monroe have been discovered. About 100 previously unpublished photographs of the late actress Marilyn Monroe taken by a friend of 10 years will be showcased in London.
Give the Wordtracker Top 1000 (short term report) a try and see what interesting topics come up.

KEI Observation Deck April 2
The KEI Observation Deck is brought to you by the wonderful folks at Wordtracker support. Tune in right here each day for a few hot topics with high KEI on all different subjects and topics. According to Wordtracker, the higher the KEI value is for a phrase, the bigger the window of opportunity is for finding a phrase that is in fair to high usage BUT also has lower competition.
A KEI value of 100 can represent a fair to good opportunity
A KEI value of 400 can represent an excellent opportunity
The higher the KEI, the better the window of opportunity.
Welcome to some more high KEI observations today:
Question:
Hello,
I operate a Web site related to photography and for photographers.
I am going through a list of high KEI phrases that I found maybe a month ago. Before I optimize pages at my Web site with these terms, I am doublechecking their KEI at Wordtracker. Many of the terms that were pure gold just a month ago have now dropped low or even off the map completely. If it takes a search engine up to two months to find a new page, and the term drops within a month, what's the point?
Thanks,
Jim
ANSWER:
Hi Jim,
Thank you for your question. First of all, never get discouraged. While it's true that some terms can change quickly, it's also true that some terms change much slower and some terms never seem to change at all. Also remember that Wordtracker is only a small window on the world of your customers "searching behavior." It does NOT reveal all...but it reveals much more than most people realize.
In a minute, I'll give you an example how you might try finding astronomically high KEI phrases to attract your audience.
My objective in answering your question is not to just give you all of the answers, but I want to encourage you and demonstrate to you how you can dig enourmously compelling things out of Wordtracker. I'll get back to this in just a minute.
About using KEI:
Remember that choosing high KEI terms is an easy way to go about picking up low hanging fruit, but also remember that as you grow your skills, you should become quite comfortable competing for more competitive terms, with practice and experience. Don't let KEI be the only criteria for making your decision.
Our biggest challenge is to learn to stop thinking of keywords and begin thinking about "behaviours." We must stop thinking about all of the average keywords everyone else is thinking about and begin to try and expand our scope.
Quick ideas and an exercise:
Who is your target audience? Photographers and people who like to take pictures, right? Photo enthusiasts for example, care much more about their craft than just the surface keywords that come to mind.
Photography, pictures, photos, photo tips, and all this type of thing. Here is how I would explore it and let's actually go hunting for some terms in Wordtracker, but we'll go after very high KEI to start.
Lateral thinking:
What are photographers interested in? What topics interest them. Okay, I need film or I might be interested in specific types of photography. Let's just choose an element or component of interest to our audience and explore.
Strategy:
I'm going to use a little Wordtracker Magic and come up with 4 or 5 ideas that I could add into my site. For this example I'm going to think not about my Web site's objectives, I want to think about my audience so I've decided to create some content around a topic that should be dear to most professional and amateur photographers.
Let's stop thinking about all the buzz words and see what people are doing concerning a "lens" for their cameras. Maybe you're thinking...but I don't sell lenses on my Web site. No, but let's just have a quick look.
Based On Google in Wordtracker's Comprehensive Research: (Here are a few ideas I just tapped into)
I'm not really a photographer personally, but these terms might make more sense to you:
"17 55mm lens nikon" KEI 1800.
"1 adapter e lens olympus" KEI 3844.
"180mm lens nikon review" KEI 4050.
"canon lens for eos 20d" KEI 4761.
"20mm lens nikon review" KEI 5618
"17 20d 85 canon eos lens" KEI 19,208.
"300mm lens nikon review" KEI 22,684
(230 searches in last 60 days)
"d70 lens macro nikon" KEI 50,081
(241 searches in the last 60 days)
"best d70 lens nikon" KEI 19602.
(198 searches in the last 60 days)
Okay, these are just a few ideas. I'd write the reviews and add them to your Web site.
Will the KEI values change? Perhaps, but these are lenses that photographers want to know about, so why should they not learn about them from you or from your Web site? You could even join an affiliate program and sell the lenses for a monthly commission.
Okay, maybe you don't want to work with affiliate marketing or actually sell the lenses and earn a monthly commission, but it sure is a thought.
How much will the KEI change on these? It's safe to say that the demand will go up and the terms will become more competitive as long as photographers are interested in reading reviews on these products (and other people discover the demand).
I think these phrases would be worth working on and for the time being, they're not competitive at all. You can look up the numbers yourself, but there are probably at least another 15 other phrases around lenses (with KEI over 400) that you could build content for, to attract some people in on a fairly consistant basis.
Also remember that your success with "reviews" is dependant on writing really good, useful content for the readers.
If you want some more tips on thinking outside of the box, you might also enjoy the recent tips I gave on World Talk Radio.
You can listen to the audio of it here: http://www.searchengineworkshops.com/articles/talk-show.html
There are many other things you could explore too. Just practice going beyond the normal keywords that we all have in our minds and practice digging for behaviors. Be greatly encouraged and get the best out of Wordtracker. I don't think you can ever run out of promotional ideas using Wordtracker in this fashion.
I hope this helps.
