Wordtracker Magic Q & A May 29
Question:
I've read your book Wordtracker Magic a few times then only I "got it" on how to think laterally when doing keyword research at wordtracker.
Answer:
Excellent! It should open many windows of opportunity as you practice researching behavior using this method.
Question:
How about if the key phrase has low KEI low competition but highly searched? Would you still consider it?
Answer:
Absolutely. The only difference is that you are going to have to use more optimization in order to compete, if you are going after a phrase that is highly competitive.
But think about it. For example, I am very comfortable competing for a phrase that has 100,000 competing pages, but if I see something I want, I am prepared to and able to compete with even a million competing pages and win. It's a lot more work but there is not a thing wrong with that.
Question:
So what is the difference?
Answer:
The difference is that I must work a little harder and optimize a little better than all those other competing pages.
You can do it, but my point is that with a little lateral thinking, you can come up with extraordinary potential by NOT doing exactly what everyone else is doing. After all, you are wiser to spend your time creating actual valuable content rather than "laboring" for placement. Does that make sense? Why stress over rankings and fighting the competition when there are awesome trends and opportunities just laying all over the place that many Webmasters don't even see or know exist?
So yes, you can climb the tree to go after "high hanging fruit" if you wish. It just takes a little more optimization work and you need to exercise solid optimization skills. The most important aspect, is creating really useful, high value content. Something that is of legitimate value for your reader. That's where many people need to labor and work harder. Instead, some people get it backwards. They are creating lower quality content and spending all their time trying to optimize or basically fiddling with code. This can be a waste of valuable time. Always focus on building quality content that is of true use and interest to your visitors.
Question:
You mentioned earlier that you only use 1 keyphrase per page/article, right? I take it that I can use more than 1 when I write content for that page/article.
Answer:
No. I highly recommend that while you are just learning, you need stick to 1 researched phrase per article. That's one of the biggest errors that we see new SEOs make. They try optimizing for too many various topics on one page and nulify the focus instead of spreading their researched topics throughout the Web site.
My partner Robin Nobles is famous for her training quote "FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS" when she teaches our students. It's quite true.
Also make sure you are creating high value, genuinely useful content for your visitors too. The resaon you need excellent focus is if you expect to optimize successfully especially for those lower KEI valued phrases.
Question:
Where can I learn more about SEO skills if I cannot travel to your SEO Workshop?
Have you ever studied optimization principles in a professional training environment? These are essential skills and they will make a difference in your comfort level and ability. We teach our 5-Day Workshop at www.searchengineworkshops.com.
However, if you cannot travel to a workshop, you may want to study and build your SEO skills through our SEO Training courses.

KEI Observations for May 25
The KEI Observation Deck May 25:
"Bluebook Values for Motorcycles" KEI 472.0
Let's dip in to see what kind of windows of opportunity there are for phrases that relate to artwork. Here are some more examples of how just a few words can make a huge difference:
"fine art prints" KEI is only 0.105
(very dismal with over 1 million competing pages)
However, check out these....
"limited edition whitetail deer prints" KEI 1764.0
( ZERO competition for this exact combination but it's had the potential of doing over 40 sales in the last 60 days).
or how about...
"african american limited art prints" KEI 1387.5
(Potentially over 149 searches in the last 60 days)
Because these are so targeted, I would estimate that some smart affiliate could be making some great money on these. No guarantees of course but generally the narrower the niche, the better the results.
Okay, more for you affiliate marketers around the subject of color but not particularly art related:
Starting with fair to moderate KEI values 200 and up:
"help picking paint colors" KEI 213.7
"Chart of Hair Colors" KEI 307.8
"Choosing Paint Colors for a Room" KEI 386.7
And some nice higher KEI values for topics of:
"Fireplace Mantel Paint Colors" KEI 2304
"3m scotchlite reflective vinyl colors" KEI 2601
Today's selection of KEI Observations have been brought to you by the friendly folks at Wordtracker, that extraordinary keyword research tool and by John Alexander, author of the world famous guide to performing Wordtracker Magic.
Drop by again soon for more observations from the KEI Observation Deck at Search Engine Workshops.

Excellent keyword window for video game repairs
Welcome to the KEI Observation Deck for Friday May 20.
Have you been struggling to find those higher KEI windows of opportunity? Here are a couple of fresh observations for you today.
Let's do a little quick review:
If your just new here, I'll just recap that here at the KEI Observation Deck, I regularly post keyword phrase combinations that have a Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) of over 400, which usually constitutes a phrase which you can optimize conent for without too much stress. These high KEI values represent phrases that are really in use by the buying audience of online searchers, but at the same time, they are not too competitive. In other words, even if you are just starting out in SEO skills training, you should easily be able to compete and gain good exposure by working with these phrases.
The keyword research tool of choice by most experienced talent, is none other than Wordtracker.com.
According to Wordtracker a good phrase has a KEI of at least 100
An excellent phrase has a KEI of at least 400
Rule of thumb: The higher the KEI, the better the "window of opportunity" in general. Now KEI is really just a math equation and it's not perfect, but it is very powerful especially when you explore Wordtracker's awesome database with a little lateral thinking skills.
Wordtracker can in fact become your "window on the world" of peoples "searching behavior" in real time within the last 60 days.
How powerful is that? In a single word, it is extraordinary!
Of course it still only represents a small fraction of the searches that are being done in real time, but throughout the Wordtracker database, there are wonderful opportunities for those who have sharpened their lateral thinking skills. There are awesome "trends" and what I have come to recognize as "trails of pure gold" just laying about, waiting for the researcher to discover. The beauty is that many people are totally unaware of the possibilities and the power of researching "behavior." Many are off in a hunt for keywords (which is good too.) But a slight shift in the way you understand Wordtracker and the way you use it, opens up a whole new wondrous landscape of opportunity. If you need help on any of your search engine related skills, from keyword research to behavioral research, to the process of optimization and actually gaining those top ranks to improving the response, then consider registering for our hands-on SEO Mastery Workshop. It's coming up in just 3 weeks.
Check out the 5-Day Workshop Agenda
Okay, let's have a look at a few high KEI phrases for May 20:
The subject is video game repairs. First here is a very competitive example:
"xbox repairs" KEI 0.013
(Very competitive with at least 144,000 pages)
However, if we sprinkle in a little magic, here a a few more phrases that represent much better windows of opportunity:
"xbox game repairs" KEI 498.5
"ps2 disc repairs" KEI 3422.0
"repairs xbox disc" KEI 2360.1
"xbox disc repairs" KEI 2242.0
Pretty nice opportunities if you have some articles and quality content built around these subjects.
Okay, here are a couple other general observations not related to video games at all:
"bronze cabinet hinges offset" KEI 625.0
"fence wire splicer" KEI 576.0
I hope you enjoyed these examples. Drop by again soon for many more observations. Also, consider joining Robin Nobles and I in our upcoming Atlanta SEO Mastery Workshop for some very personalized skill building exercise.
We'll look forward to seeing you again soon.

Wisdom from Michael Campbell
Today, between KEI observations, I thought I would post a few bits of wisdom from from Michael Campbell.
Here for your enjoyment are 3 articles:

Sometimes things change and are never the same again. Learn how to read the handwriting on the wall, know when changes are coming, and cash in on them before anyone else.
Passion Prevents Burnout....By Michael Campbell
Lack of passion for what you do, is the single biggest problem with earning a living online, or anywhere else for that matter. Here's how to stay focused, prevent burn out, and stay passionate in all that you do.
Top 10 Selling TipsBy Michael Campbell
Is fear of selling keeping you from converting your prospects into buyers? Here are my top 10 techniques for squashing fear and transferring your confidence to create happy lifetime customers.
I can still remember the first time I met Michael Campbell in person at one of our SEO Mastery Workshops which we were conducting in Vancouver at the time. Michael does not speak at conferences but he had agreed to attend our little SEO Workshop. I thought he might attend and speak for a couple of hours and then I thought, that would probably be it. But I was so impressed when Michael came out to the workshop and just sat with the students, working with them every day, helping them with their SEO skills, answering their questions. The amazing thing was he came back every single day, just to be with us and help our attendees learn.
Of course since that time, he has come to our SEO Workshops every time we've been in Vancouver and we can't say enough about the wealth of knowledge he has shared with us. Michael Campbell is a wonderful friend with the same core values that we have. People helping people is the best way to forge relationships.
We have been very blessed by following Michael's advice and listening to his wisdom on several occasions within the industry. My guess is that you will be too. Every so often, you meet someone who is bound to just become a friend through common interests or points of view. We are so pleased to have had the opportunity to come to know Michael Campbell.
Check out a few back issues of Michael Campbell's newsletter.
They are loaded with good counsel and advice.

Can I give you a few high KEI examples? May 16
Wordtracker KEI Observation Deck for May 16
Can I give you a few high KEI examples? No really. I mean I give you a few high KEI exammples here in every post, but today I thought in might be fun to just observe a few observations around a root of the term "examples."
In other words, what do Internet searchers look for examples of? It's a good question to ask because once you know what searchers want "examples" of, you can create some great content and take in that traffic. After all, they may as well find your examples as someone elses, right?
Okay let's dig right into Wordtracker first, then spinkle in a little magic and see what we come up with in the next few seconds:
Now these may not particularly by a "buying audience" as I expect
quite a number of these to be people who are looking for "free
examples" but interesting all the same.
Check out a few of these KEI values of 400 and higher:
"Visual Examples of Subliminal Messages" KEI 420.0
"Can You Give Me Examples of a Metaphor" KEI 815.4
Okay, not an example, but a "sample." Very nice KEI value though.
"paint samples on walls" KEI 15,866.0
"Training Evaluation Form Examples" KEI 1190.0
"Examples of Short Haircuts" KEI 1492.5
"Free Examples of Employee Evaluations" KEI 3800.1
"Free Examples of Thesis Statements" KEI 592.9
"Examples of Elementary Science Fair Projects" KEI 1340.0
Okay we'll stop there but you could dig around and find many others I am sure.
A couple other quick observations:
"craft activity guides" KEI 412.0
"policies and procedures manuals for law firms" KEI 400.0
"Self Defence Manuals Free" KEI 1089.0
"Hand washing policy and procedures" KEI 529.0
"the fears of first grade" KEI 400.0
I hope you enjoyed today's observations in Wordtracker. I'll be working for a little longer in here today, but I am always amazed at the wonderful things you can discover in terms of keyword research as well as unique behavioral research within Wordtracker.
If you are struggling to tap into great phrases, you may enjoy reading a few of our Wordtracker tutorials on this page:

KEI Observation Deck - What questions searchers want to know
KEI Observation Deck - People are asking questions and looking to the search engines for answers. Think about it. It's an interesting observation is it not? Okay, here we go then with a few high KEI observations identifying what things people seem to want to know:
KEI Observation Deck - May 10
"how many bones do you have in your body" KEI 264.0
"How Many Rooms in White House" KEI 961.0
"how many zeros in a vigintillion" KEI 1024.0
"how many transistors are in a new cpu" KEI 1369.0
"How many episodes did the 1954 TV Series, Lassie air" KEI 2178.0
"How Many Children Does Ray Charles Have" KEI 2520.0
Okay, now let's just look at a few questions people are searching for that are not high KEI but just consider the merit of the question in general: (some of these are just a little odd to be asking a search engine, or maybe not....you be the judge)
Since the KEI values are nothing special, I won't bother printing
them, but these are things people have actually searched for on a search engine recently.
"How Many Weeks Pregnant Am I"
"how many more times"
"how many calories do i need"
"how many leather panels does a soccer ball have"
"how many muscles does a cat have"
"How many teeth does a mosquito have"
"how many stitches does a baseball have"
and
"How many ridges around the edge does a US dime have"
That's it for now. I hope to see you again soon.
Best regards
John Alexander

KEI Observations - Questions people ask in searching May 9
KEI Observations - Questions people ask in searching May 9
Welcome back to the KEI Observation Deck.
Here are a few quick observation from the members area of Wordtracker.
For those just dropping by the KEI observation deck today, let me capsulize what this is all about. Wordtracker is in my opinion, one of the greatest power tools for keyword research and behavioral research. Ideally, you want to know about keywords and phrases that have a high KEI (Keyword effectiveness Index).
The higher the KEI value (400 and beyond) usually represents a bigger "window of opportunity." While many Webmasters struggle to find those high KEI phrases, (keywords in high use by searchers, but also with low competition) I use my Wordtracker Magic formula to instantly tap into the very best keyword combinations very quickly (often in just minutes.)
Okay, on with today's observations:
"RSS Latest News" KEI 811.0
"wool yarn seconds" KEI 625.0
"discount matted picture frames" KEI 585.0
"picture frames with plexiglass" KEI 666.1
Okay, now let's dig in and examine a few more high KEI valued keyword phrases of at least 400 or higher. But this time let's see what kinds of "questions" people are asking the most. What kind of topics are people searching for?
Last week at the Search engine strategies conference in Toronto, I thought the comments offered by the representative from MSN were particularly interesting. Basically, MSN is going to try and deliver results that are focused on answering people's questions.
It'll be interesting to see how this idea develops.
Did you read about a few of the highlights from the Toronto SES Conference yet? I really enjoyed attending and wrote a little bit about the experience here.
Here are a few interesting searches:
"10 Most Common Phobias" KEI 400.7
"Top Ten Most Dangerous Dogs" KEI 432.0
"Striving to be the most professional organization" KEI 1098.7
"Most Popular Newlywed Game Questions" KEI 1352
Now check out the difference in KEI based on these two phrases....
"most paid athlete" KEI 3808.0
"most paid athlete tiger woods" KEI 66196.1
If you would like to lear alternative strategies for using Wordtracker as your "window on the world" of searching behaviors, check out Wordtracker Magic. If you would like help building up your optimization skills, consider attending our 5-day, hands-on SEO Mastery workshop which is coming up in Altanta on June 13 to 17.

Wordtracker KEI Observation Deck May 7
Wordtracker KEI Observation Deck May 7
My apologies to those of you who have had difficulty ordering
Wordtracker Magic in the last couple of days. We have recently
changed Web Hosts and it was taking a little while for the DNS to
resolve to the new location. Hopefully, most of you can access the
Web site now.
Okay, on with a few more high KEI observations today:
"Wall Gun Racks" KEI 682
"dish racks small" KEI 3249
"portable art show displays" KEI 1235.0
"picture molding router bits" KEI 529.0
"glass core drill bits" KEI 572.0
Now some of you may be wondering what is so great about these types of keyword phrases with a high KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index)?
Wordtracker Magic free audio lessons are located right here to
explain exactly what it's all about. Here's a hint. It is not about
the keyword phrase alone, but it's also about the searching behavior.
In other words, always ask yourself why someone might be entering
a specific phrase like this into the search engine? Once you
discover what searchers are really after, it helps expand the scope
of your understanding. You begin to think more laterally about the
power and the value of what Wordtracker can do for you.
Lateral thinking and a little practice reduce your keyword research time from hours to just minutes and sometimes to seconds. Let Wordtracker do the hard work for you and reveal the very best windows of opportunity.
Drop by again soon for new top KEI phrases here at the KEI Observation Deck.
