Use High KEI as a Guide - but don't forget the compete number
Welcome to the KEI Observation Deck.
In here I regularly enjoy demonstrating how many wonderful windows of opportunity can easily be found in Wordtracker. Sometimes I get tired of hearing some Webmasters complain that they cannot find any decent high KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) values.
They say...."All the good keywords are gone and it's far too competitive." Then I say..."But you have to change the way you "think" if you want to tap into the very best niches quickly."
My name is John Alexander and I also teach a live, hands-on SEO Workshop that covers one of my favourite subjects which is that of "Keyword Forensics." My partner and I teach the full scope of SEO skills in a 5-Day SEO Workshop with certification and we include our personal 6 month mentoring program afterwards. Our students are very successful.
Okay, on to the subject for today. This is a little off base, but lets touch on "lower KEI" values that are still not that competitive.
Before we dip into Wordtracker, for some keyword observations I'm going to give you another couple of little tips on using Wordtracker.
So many people get hung up on analyzing keywords, that they never get any work done. For example....
Did you know that you do not have to obsess over high count numbers?
Some people think that if they see a keyword has only been searched in the last 90 days about a dozen times, that the phrase is no good.
The count does not reflect how many times a phrase is being searched "on the Internet." The count is based on the search that is contained within Wordtracker's data of around 350 million search queries within the last 90 days, but that data is still only a tiny fraction of 1% of all searches done on the Internet.
However, it is an enourmous "window on the world of search behavior."
Did you know that you don't have to be obsessed with high KEI values?
Use them only as a guide. Also watch the all important "Compete number."
Let's show you some keywords that have low KEI but still have under 500 competing pages:
Example: I just picked a random topic of "trays."
"tray ceiling designs" KEI is only 6.6 (pretty weak)
but you would only be competing with 184 other pages for this exact phase on Google.
"desk extension laptop tray" KEI is only 101 but competition 47
"car food tray" KEI 0.63 Competition is 572
Literally anybody with just basic optimization training could be taking top ranks for these examples (assuming you had a Web site
that was offering these products.)
Let's raise the bar to 1000 competing pages. Are your SEO skills
fair enough to compete with 1000 pages?
Examples...
"large ice cube trays" KEI 0.42 Compete 1050 pages
"TV Dinner Trays" KEI 0.54 Compete 970 pages
"car food tray" KEI 0.631 Compete 572 pages
Okay...you can see what I mean. What I am pointing out is to use KEI as a guide, but if you see a good phrase you want to optimize for, look beyond the KEI.
How are your keyword research skills in Wordtracker?
Would you like a little help to find some industry specific keywords
extremely quickly? Here is my little Wordtracker magic guide.
Be very encouraged in your keyword research studies.
The techniques and tips that I teach in my "keyword forensics"
session are the secrets that I would never share in my early days.
But that we are educators, we are sharing all of our very finest and freshest skill building information now at our 3-Day Advanced SEO Mastery
Workshop and Certification Program.
Also remember that you can learn how to raise your SEO skill set and optimize for "highly competitive" phrases. Each month Robin Nobles, Dave Barry and I take a small group of people and teach them exactly how to do the job. If you are in the Orlando area, we have a Workshop coming up in just 10 days at the most magical place on earth, Disneyworld.
And now back to more HIGH KEI observations as I know that many of our KEI Observation Deck readers still enjoy seeing those extra high KEI value phrases and I love finding them for you.
Thank you to those who have written recently and to those who register for the Workshop, I'll look forward to meeting you in person and working with on your SEO skills starting October 16-20.
By the way, are you getting our Free SEO Tip of the day? Its one
free tip every single day and costs nothing. Subscribe or
un-subscribe as often as you wish.
