What's the next most powerful method next to SEO?

Someone asked me what I thought the next most powerful marketing method to traditional search marketing and SEO was. In my opinion, that would be working to build your dedicated list of permission based e-mail subscribers.
Some folks call it "building a list," but I like to think of it more as building "relationships."
