Wordtracker Questions and Answers
Dear John,
"What do you mean when you talk about researching the target audience's "behavior?" Is that not what Web analytics software like Webtrends is for?"
J.Lawrence
Dear J.
Web analysis software generally tells you about the behavior of visitors within your Web site AFTER they have found you.
I am talking about the importance of researching your ideal target audiences behavior long before they ever find your Web site.
Wordtracker has tremendous potential to reveal clues as to what your target audience *really* wants or what they are looking for.
There are many more ways to assist your buying audiences, if you understand the circumstances that cause them to search in the fashion that they do. You won't always instantly tap into these type of expressions and phrases, but when you do it is most rewarding (especially if you have the solution for them.)
Best wishes,
John Alexander
----------------------------
Question:
"I sometimes still have trouble finding keywords with higher KEI. Am I missing something or doing something wrong? Sometimes I find great values way over 400 or 500. Other times I am just not able to find much."
Jason R.
Dear Jason,
You are more than likely doing everything well but for some topics, you are going to need to change the way you are thinking.
Like anything else, you improve with practice. As you will discover not all "root words" render the same insights. Here are a few more tips:
- Try narrowing your phrase down to single root word or term.
- Try to avoid the most logical terms for root words and choose weaker supporting terms sometimes. Even terms that you feel might be useless will render surprising and interesting trails (sometimes very telling.) Most people don't ever see these because they tend to guess at words that make the most sense (based on their reasoning and/or recent experiences.)
- Try choosing an "action related" root term but leave out the subject to allow Wordtracker to fill in the most valuable part for you.
- Remember to test related synonyms of your root word. (Ideally those that are Semantically related through the full search function.)
- Purposely try checking for popular acronyms that are industry specific. Many searchers will type in sort of a lazy fashion like when speaking in a chat room.
Also in your question, you don't mention much about the compete value.
Keep a close eye on this because a fair to high number of searches for relevant phrase with low compete count is really all you need. In other words, don't become obsessed with high KEI. Watch those compete numbers too.
Best regards
John Alexander
PS: Remember that if you are a member of the SEO Workshop Resource Center, I will be doing a series of onscreen Webinars soon on the topics of Keyword Forensics at http://www.SEW-WRC.com
---------------------------
QUESTION:
"John, I don't understand why Wordtracker returns upper and lower case sensitive phrases when most of the search engines are no longer case sensitive?"
T.
Dear T,
This can be turned on or off from the advanced menu settings. While there was a time when some search engines were case sensitive, it's true that you no longer need to be concerned with case sensitivity. Of course that is no guarantee that some smaller engines are not case sensitive or that things may change in the future.
Best regards,
John Alexander
-------------------------------
That's all the questions for this week.
Remember that there really are big differences in little tiny words that make up your keyword phrase.
Learn to explore and dig through Wordtracker's data and follow some of these tips. Remember that you can work in Wordtracker for a long time and never discover it all or see it all.
So many people miss great data because of their narrow keyword hunting minds set. There are always fresh trends waiting to be discovered, if you'll just change your thinking to just a little wider scope. Just a different angle.
More observations coming up soon.

Reader Question about Wordtracker
Hi John,
Thanks for all these tips, I enjoy them very much. I am subscribed with nichebot keyword research tool ,the reason is the price 10$ a month vs Word tacker 60$.
I am wondering by using the nichebot am I loosing anything?
thank you in advance.
K.
------------------------------
Dear K.
Yes, Nichebot is a fine tool and the fact that it less
expensive is wonderful.
The best question to ask yourself is, how is your Web site(s) prospering? Does your Web site make you money or does it
cost you money? Are you finding lots of new ways to continually
improve your Web site.
The bottom line is this. If your Web site is prospering and doing well and giving you advantages over the competition, then you are doing something right. Keep doing what you are doing. But if your unhappy with your Web site's performance and it is not producing the results you want, then keyword research and behavioral research of the marketplace is the single most important thing you can do and the smartest first step (always.)
In our Workshops we believe in focusing on teaching the skills
rather than just comparing tools. Any tool is only as good as the folks behind the tool. I know plenty of friends who swear by Nichebot as being a great tool and so the question I ask is how well is it meeting your specific needs?
I am not only bound to one tool and it is not wrong to rely on more than one tool. Nichebot is a very fine tool.
But Wordtracker is the finest tool that I have ever found, for
giving me huge advantages in exploring search behavior.
In discovering Wordtracker's powerful ability to quickly tap into many user behaviors, I have never found any other tool as effective for revealing the "story behind the user search."
Wordtracker is also extraordinary for exploring the marketplace if you do affiliate marketing. It also has a number of other features that I know from personal experience are genuine and really work well.
Understanding the conditions that exist in your visitors life is
even more powerful than just hunting for some keyword niche. Like a keyword set of terms that is very revealing about what the user really wants.
Try and think of it like like everyone is using the Internet for a different reason (usually based on the conditions of their life circumstances) or their business. There are many amazing things to be discovered and I just never stop finding new trends in Wordtracker. It is not so much about the volume of data, but more about the quality of data.
Read this article:
15 Keyword Research Tips for Finding the Hottest Niches Quickly
Keep in mind that if you have read Wordtracker Magic (which you
should have got a free copy of if you signed up for our free SEO
tip of the day.
That you won't find too much in Wordtracker's free Trial as it limits the data you have access to. It's only just a demo. But in the paid members area, you have trails of gold to discover.
Some people spend literally hours in Wordtracker, but if you know how, you can tap into great trends within just minutes and sometimes even seconds.
I have a new version of Wordtracker Magic 2.0 coming out pretty soon
that is more about how to perform Keyword Forensics and how to tap into the hidden evidence much more quickly.
But here are a few articles that may help a little:
Benefits of an Illogical anything goes approach to keyword research.
How can I learn better keyword research - Let me count the ways - 10 more Tips
Other good tools are http://www.Keyworddiscovery.com which is excellent for its support of multiple languages if you optimize in French, German, Polish, Norwegian or several other languages. The KEI values are set up on a scale of 1 to 10 so that is a little different.
I respect everyone's opinion on whatever their favorite tool is but for me, Wordtracker is the Granddaddy research tool of them all. The Wordtracker tool changed the way I think.
I would not ever want to be without Wordtracker (personally) since it is just like looking through a small porthole on the world's search behavior. I am able to instantly find trends of the user search as well as what is really going on in the marketplace. Watch for those phrase clusters that "tell a story."
It's like anything else in this industry. Tools are as only good as
the resources behind the tool. Continue to focus on building your
genuine SEO skills so that you are flexible in knowing how to make
the best decisions. My tendency for years has been to lean on Wordtracker and so far it has never let me down in all the years I've been using it.
But that does not mean there is no room for other tools too. I highly recommend Keyword Discovery especially if you are handling optimization in other languages. Here is another little interesting free tool as well...
Keyword Map
If you are a member of our SEO Workshop Resource Center, I will be teaching a series of live Webinars later this month so you can come online and watch me working in Wordtracker. The first Webinar will begin this Thursday and they are like our instructional chats, all free to our members.
I wish you the best of continued success in your work.

Keyword research tips - mining the best in minimal time
Greetings,
A few years ago, I wrote an e-book called, Wordtracker Magic and I've spent time helping to teach students about how to quickly tap into the best keyword phrase trends and niches very quickly.
Let's start by outlining a couple of the more common errors some people can make initially, when first using Wordtracker. For a while, I actually had the privilege of working with Wordtracker support and answering peoples keyword related questions on a regular basis, a few years ago. That was a great learning experience.
What I learned was that often, people were sometimes not finding the best niche phrases available, simply because many people naturally tended to want to "guess" at keywords, rather than fully explore the existing fresh data.
If you have not read these 15 Keyword research tips, have a look!
15 Keyword research Tips for finding the Hottest Niche Phrases Quickly
Here are a whole list of other research articles for you too. Enjoy!
Drop by soon for more tips and observations from the KEI Observation Deck.
