Why you should not be "obsessed" over KEI
If you are like many keyword researchers, as you learn to spot huge niches or "windows of opportunity" for specific high KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) values, there is a tendency to only go after higher and high KEI values.
Assuming you have read the Keyword Forensics e-book or Wordtracker Magic 2.0 guide, then I want to explain why you do not need to be obsessed with high KEI only.
The process of finding very KEI values with magnificent opportunities is the magic aspect that many Wordtracker users miss by a mile. If you have not got a copy of my e-book, then read this article called 3 Magical Keyword Research Tips.
One of the things to realize, is that in this process, KEI is just a mathematical formula for for floating the best potential data to the top quickly. But from there, it is not about KEI. It becomes about how many competing pages you are up against. The smaller that number for phrases that are being searched, the easier your job will be to grab to spot and the traffic for that phrase.
Try to think of KEI as way to sort data quickly and remember that if you are really observant and understand the process, you are looking for phrases that are based on search behavior, which often "tell a story" about why the search was initiated, or "reveal a trend" about the circumstances in the searchers life. Wordtracker is a very powerful window on the world of search behavior.
Are you ready for more keyword phrase observations?
This time, I am not going list the KEI value here, but I will say that at the time of research each one of these phrases have less than 10 competing pages in Google!
Root: Clearance
Here we go:
"Summer patio clearance sale" 5 competing
"ball caps clearance" 1 competing
"central air conditioning units clearance" 3 competing
"duck costume clearance" 1 competing
"women's robe clearance" 6 competing
"fireplace clearance sales" 1 competing
"clearance pool liners" 8 competing
"zero clearance free standing fireplace" 1 competing
"clearance artist paints" 1 competing
Remember that these are not examples of high volume phrases, but assuming a few searches are being done, the number of searches represent less than a fraction of 1% of searches being done on the Internet. Also remember that by optimizing very tightly focused pages with useful and helpful content you do not need millions of visitors to make money. Even just a few visitors a week can bring in good income if you are attracting those who are searching for what you are offering.
