Google SEO Tips On Pagerank And Site Links

One of the things to remember about Google PageRank is that it does contribute to relevancy in a number of ways, but it is only just one bit out of a huge range of influences.

Did you know the Google PR number is somewhat out of date (usually by about 3 months) so what you see reflected in the bar does not always represent your current PR.

How high should your PR be in order to be more visible?

The Affiliate Marketing Talents of Michael Campbell

If you are performing affiliate marketing, you most likely have heard of Michael Campbell.

I remember a few years ago meeting Michael for the very first time in Vancouver BC where he had said that he'd like to drop in to the SEO Workshop we were conducting at the time. I had read his book "Nothing But Net" and was not too surprised when Robin mentioned that she had known Michael from her early SEO Online days. So she said she was going to invite him to attend our little hands-on workshop.

I was very impressed to see how much he cared for our students.

Michael was not big on teaching from the front of the room, but he would sit with the students and just teach them things about affiliate marketing. Since then, nearly any time we taught in Vancouver, Michael Campbell would come for a visit which we always appreciated it since so many of our students tended to want to learn affiliate marketing with SEO skills.

Here is what Michael Campbell had to say about attending our SEO Workshop classes in Vancouver:

Dear Robin Nobles and John Alexander:

"This was the first conference - that I honestly can say - I had fun at. So many conferences, seminars and workshops are stiff and formal. There's no getting to know the speakers and lecturers. This one was totally different."

"Everyone that comes is given hands on tutorials. You're shown an exact SEO process from start to finish. You also get a critique of your site and have to pass an SEO test to get certified."

"After the three days, you'll know exactly what to do and in what order. You'll know how to use all the tools. You'll also be surprised how easy it is to get top search engine rankings, once you know how."

Best,
Michael Campbell
------------------------

Now I'd like to tell you more about Michael which, if you do not know him personally, I think you'd appreciate knowing.

One of the major things you can learn from Michael is what he demonstrates in the way of caring about his readers. As a personal friend, I can tell you that he is one of the only people that I've had the pleasure of working with, who truly cares about people OVER making money. Michael has made money as you will learn if you read up on any of his experiences, but he does not just jump on something for the purpose of making money.

So many other marketers today, just pitch their products and they can try to emulate a caring approach, But Michael has demonstrated to his readers (and to us) over and over that life is more about caring for people and as a result, you will make plenty of money.

Finally, I want to tell you about Michael's newest program called "Goobert" or the "Google Blog Alert" system. It will be of special interest to affiliate marketers as another means of producing traffic on a social media basis. I've tested it and it does work well. If you are looking for some new ideas to help you with increasing your sales then check out this advice from one of the affiliate marketing masters, Michael Campbell.

Personalization of Search Video with Mike Marshall

Are you prepared for the future SEO challenges posed By the Personalization of Search?"
By John Alexander

There are 3 types of responses that we hear expressed from the professional SEO community with respect to how the personalization of search will affect the average business owner's profitability and traffic. In just a minute, I'll let you watch a video of Michael Marshall explaining these 3 responses.

But if you are wondering what all of the controversy over the issue of personalization is about, let's touch on that for a moment first.

Most of the major search engines have been gravitating towards providing a much more user friendly experience by offering enhanced personalization which can be switched on or off. The result of switching it on is that the search engine begins to gather data about the type of information you search for over time and then it has the effect of "personalizes" the search results by delivering up the most pertinent data based on an individuals search preferences.

The advantage or benefit is geared toward the benefit of the user. Over time the specific search engine seems to be able to shuffle through search results and quickly deliver the best information based on the independent searcher's interests. Not only that, but the results are shuffled based on each users interests even if 3 or 4 people are all searching on the same machine.

What this means is that the aspect of traditional "rankings" or where a Web page shows up in the results will totally depend on who is doing the search. The same search for the exact same keyword phrase, will no longer produce the same exact results to different searchers because results will be shuffled and delivered up according to each searcher's interests. Much of how you performed SEO and traditional rank checking will become obsolete since over time, you can no longer assume every user sees the same results for a specific search term. In fact as personalization becomes more widely adopted, the traditional forms of rank checking will eventually become meaningless. In the future, traditional SEO software tools for rank checking will no longer help you determine how well you are doing or what percentage of your audience is even seeing your page.

What is your reaction to the personalization of search?
What are other people saying about the "personalization of search" and it's implications to traffic and business.

Mike Moran is an IBM Distinguished Engineer, expert on Internet marketing, and the author of Search Engine Marketing, Inc., the best-selling book on search marketing.

Mike Moran has stated that:
"Personalization of search, is the biggest change to come to search marketing since pay-per-click."

SEO educator Mike Marshall, with Search Engine Academy also recently addressed the topic explaining some of the most common perceptions that are being reflected about the changes to come. Watch this short video of SEO educator Michael Marshall as he explains the 3 most common responses from people about the impact personalization will have on SEO for the future.

Keyword research Vs. Keyword Forensics

Keyword research Vs. Keyword Forensics

People often get the 2 terms confused.

"Keyword research" refers to the act of researching specific keyword phases to see where the best "windows of opportunity" are to optimize your pages using "meaningful terms" that searchers are searching for.

There are dozens of free keyword tools as well as a variety of paid services that you can choose from.

Let's talk about Keyword Forensics research today first.

"Keyword forensics" is an entirely different approach with a focus on exploring huge amounts of detailed data very quickly and finding interesting phrases that "tell a story" about the circumstances and the needs in the lives of those searching. These trends are often hidden for a number of reasons but the "keyword forensics" aspect tends to be more about understanding user behavior than simply what keywords are being typed into a box.

Seek to understand the real reasons why people are searching the way they do and you can actually find opportunities that 99% of the typical keyword researchers miss altogether, because they are so narrowly focused on the Keywords that they "think" are important.

People use the Internet to search, based on the circumstances of their life. They search using dialog related terms, they search using shopping related terms, they search pretty intelligently these days.

So Keyword Research is about exploring keyword phrase combinations.
Done correctly, (quite powerful)

Keyword Forensics is more about exploring an entire marketplace of activity with a focus on understanding behavioral trends of searchers. Understanding why they are using the Internet
the way they do, plus understanding the exact phrase combinations
they are searching within very recent time periods.

Before we talk about powerful SEO tools you can use, I want to talk more about Keyword Forensics aspect and give you a short excerpt from

Wordtracker Magic 2.0 - Keyword Forensics for SEO.
By John Alexander

This excerpt is limited to publication only for the KEI Observation Deck Blog by permission of the author.

The more you "think like everyone else thinks" (usually drawing upon keywords that are already lodged into your mind based upon your own experiences)....then the more you will be thinking like the rest of your competition.

The more our eyes and our thinking and "our ability to observe" is attracted towards keywords that immediately "make the most sense" to our brains logically, then the more we tend to discover exactly the same keywords as the rest of the world are discovering. In the meantime, because of that narrow focus, there are often "trails of gold" that go completely untapped.

These are the behaviorally "action related phrases" that many people miss entirely, simply because they had a "keyword hunt" mind set.

Here are a few more tips from Wordtracker Magic 2.0 :

• Instead of just thinking of your research as "keywords" try thinking in terms of your audience's "topics of interest." If you see something curious in the results, remember that you can also always dig deeper with synonyms and related terms that may render considerable surprises if you be patient and take the time to explore the data.

Never assume how "any word" is being used based on its seeming lack of connection or importance. It is impossible to predict the best phrases regardless of your years of experience in keyword research. You must learn how to quickly explore all of the data instead of guessing at what you think is related.

• By exploring the plain, ordinary everyday terms (that may even sound flat and even boring,) you may just hit a fabulous brand new range of search phrases that 99% of the other Webmasters will never find. Especially if you are using "keyword forensic" techniques that I describe.

• Make a practice of quickly exploring all types of supporting data besides your primary keywords to get a whole new opportunity insight of what is going on in the real world.

If you can first understand what people are really wanting then you can meet their needs.

But you can also fulfill many different types of objectives for your Web site including:

• Attracting entirely new audiences to your Web site.
• Attracting your “ideal buying audience” to your Web site.
• Gaining whole new windows of visibility within search results for
important topics that you may never have recognized as important.
• Gaining new sign-ups or lead generation
• Tremendously improving your sales and conversions
• Solving other types of challenges that need solving
• building content that you already know there is a huge demand for.

7 Common Misconceptions To SEO

Today, I wanted to review 7 long held SEO misconceptions and discuss the truths. In order to separate the SEO truths from traditional misconceptions or errors, you always must first examine the truth.

For example, if an expert is trying to determine a counterfeit $100 dollar bill from a real $100 bill, he only gains insight by examining the real bill first. You could examine many different counterfeit bills for a long time and never gain any ground at all. But once you know and understand the real government issued bill, then you can spot the false things much more quickly.

This first misconception is a major misconception.

Here it is...

Misconception 1. You are "at war" with the search engines to gain top visibility. Therefore you must learn to do sneaky tricks to outsmart their algorithm. Therefore you must learn ways to beat the search engine to gain top visibility in search results.

Have you heard this story before?

While this whole concept (probably created by some marketer years ago) cleverly appeals to a perhaps a somewhat carnal side of being "sneaky" or being able to beat the search engines at their own game by using "secrets" and "tricks."

Even though the pitch may appeal to some people, the only trouble is that the concept is 100% FALSE from beginning to end. Some of you may be disappointed to hear this because for years, you thought you were at war with the search engines.

Think a little bit more and let's separate marketing pitches from the real truth.

Truth 1: The truth is that you have never been at "war with the search engines." You are not required to "outsmart" or fool" the search engines at all to gain top visibility for your Web pages.

The only one you are truly competing with for visibility is your competitors, NOT the search engines. The whole idea that you must "beat" the search engines or "outsmart" the search engines is a completely false concept.

You never need to compete with any search engine. You never need to trick it or even try to "fool it" in order to get excellent visibility.

A search engine does not really care whether you rank number 1 or not. They are fine with it, so long as you are offering relevant content that is useful and satisfies the reason why the user searched. Obviously any search engine does not want junk showing up in the results.

The only competition you have now or you have ever had, or will ever have in the future is with other competitors pages, not the search engines.

Being "sneaky" may appeal to some emotionally in a marketing pitch. It may make you even feel like the service or the course or publication will ultimately "make you smarter" somehow. But people need to learn to distinguish truth from error and you'll be blowing far less money on e-books, tool sets and memberships that appeal to the emotion but are founded on untruths.

Many marketers come across with this anger or emotion in their messages using words that are planted to trigger your emotions.

You can be sneaky...
I am angry because...
I am so embarrassed by what happened...
You are going to learn a secret...
I am going to show you something exciting!
etc...

Don't let your emotions be exploited.

Learn to recognize a marketing mailer that is attempting to exploit your emotions. Recognize these types of messages. Separate them out from communications that offer advice based on truths. I'll do an article on this in the future.

Misconception 2: You must submit your Web site to the Search Engines, therefore you need to buy our services and we will submit your site to 30,000 search engines for only $29.95 per month. The misconception here is that a submission to a search engine is beneficial.

Truth 2: You are far better employing strategies that allow search engine robots to find your pages on their own (without submitting.) Any company that bases their whole concept of traffic or SEO on submitting does not understand how search engines work themselves. If you are using this type of service, save your money. There is no valid reason to be using a submission service for search engines. It is still being offered today widespread because there are always new people coming online to be exploited.

Misconception 3: If a Web site has been banned, the person must be an evil or unethical person.

Truth 3: Search Engine Workshops reject anything related to Spam or short cuts or tricks that are outside of the search engines guidelines, but we do not believe people are "always evil." Many people that get banned or penalized by the search engines, are not even aware of SEO best practices. The only thing they turn out to be guilty of in the end, is of never having had any real structured SEO skills training.

In other words they were listening to some bad advice or perhaps were not even aware that each search engine has guidelines.

In some cases it's their Webmaster that may have gotten their site banned. Every situation is different but ultimately it's far better to gain your skills sooner than later. It is not always about good and evil but there most definitely is always a story behind the story and it boils down to user intent.

Misconception 4: SEO is a nightmare to try and learn.

It is extremely important to measure each SEO influence and get each factor exactly right. Therefore you need to research how many characters go in a title tag, keyword density, keyword prominence, keyword placement, how many keywords can go in a Meta tag plus all of the other factors for each individual search engine. This concept is what people seem to talk about because it's what some people are selling, but it is also completely false.

Truth 4: Sure you can spend your days measuring these types of things, but chances are you will be burning out after a while and getting very few success stories. This is because there are for more important things to understand that have an extraordinary impact in the results. SEO influences all affect one another, plus each search engine grades on a curve based on each specific industry.

Any researcher that tells you he is giving you the latest criteria based on these old fashion units of measurement will not make much impact. These days you are looking for the big picture, not individual influences one at a time. We have seen cases where people spend hours working on one page, when they could have dozens of pages performing for them in minimal time with much less stress. Yes I mean all 100% white hat strategies too, because these are all that we teach our students.

Misconception 5: You need to spend hours tweaking your source code each month to keep those top ranking positions. Therefore you cannot possibly manage your own in house search marketing. False again.

Truth 5: There are advantages to having your SEO handled by a professional firm that has been structurally trained. But don't buy it if someone says they must continually "tweak your code" to keep you in top place. It is just not true.

Yes, you may want them creating fresh new content. Yes, you'll want continued practices if you're Blogging maybe for example. But if a page is ranking in top spot, leave it alone. If you do look at making changes, make sure you are grabbing a look at the entire search landscape for your industry.

Misconception 6: SEO is Dead. This myth makes a great attention grabbing article headline although in my opinion it has been a little bit over-used. If you've read it, it is completely false.

Truth 6: SEO is merely more competitive these days but SEO is far from being dead. SEO is alive and well! Traditional rank checking may be dead, but SEO is most alive.

Misconception 7: There is only one correct solution to solve a specific SEO challenge. If it is not "my way," then it is the wrong way. Needless to say this is also false.

Truth 7: For any specific SEO challenge there are often multiple solutions to choose from. In many cases there are alternative strategies that are all white hat and yet very solid solutions. Don't let anyone tell you that there is only one way. Every Web site is different with different challenges and you need to be equipped with the full range of solutions.

Will the coming of new 3D Technologies Change the SERPS

Will the coming of new 3D Technologies Change the SERPS
By John Alexander

This is a different kind of article in which I'm just posing a question to see if you think that viewing Search Engine Results in 3 Dimensions might be something that the major search engines adopt some day?

Now before you think I've been watching too much science fiction, realize that these things could very well be experienced in the near future with the advent of new monitor screens, new flat screen TVs, Cell phone screens, movie theatres that are currently being worked on and being made "3D ready."

The 3D process creates an image that now has some depth of field and can cause images to appear to come closer toward you or appear further in the distance somewhat replicating the natural vision we have.

There are a whole variety of applications involving "Stereoscopy" which involve the concept of showing the right eye slightly differing images than the left eye, which replicates the 3D "field of depth." It's not too far off in the distance at all.

See if you can imagine this for a second. You do a search on your favorite major search engine and watch the results come up as usual.

In the typical Golden triangle or letter "F" pattern that most of us view the SERPS in, the PPC ads are generally to the top "sponsored" area, to the extreme right side (beyond the letter F pattern) and sometimes along the bottom. But since this is just a only projection of what might be possible in the near future, let's take some liberty here.

Let's say as you view the SERPs in the future but something different begins to happen because of new 3D technology and of course assuming the search engine has applied what is needed. You are up to date with the latest 3D ready monitor screen and what you experience in the search results tomorrow, might initially be jolting to the way the average searcher views their monitor today.

Just suppose those PPC ads on the right side of the screen became even more visible by actually floating right off the screen toward you in 3D?

Suppose the top ad was closest to you and the lower ads were all just slightly off the screen. Would that not give the PPC ads even more notice?

Or alternately, just suppose certain keywords (based on your search) hovered in your face based on the SERPS allowing emphasis on topical subject matter that could be selected.

What other changes to search results might the 3D factor change to traditional 2 Dimensional viewing?

Of course this is just a simple thought, but who knows what a search results page might look like when it is occupying 3D space. The actual concepts would be up to the search engine to design and employ and we know how creative they can be with new ideas. Think about advertising and logic all mashed together with 3D technology where you don't need to wear polarized lenses, or the old red/green filters.

The magic of 3D is built into the screen and requires wearing no silly glasses to experience the effect.

The company that is making these products have developed a method for 3D that requires wearing no 3D glasses of any kind. The technology is here now and is being rolled out to all types of applications from movie theaters to video game systems and computer monitors and even cell phones. Who knows how long before it becomes the norm, but don't be surprised if you begin to see 3D being applied to cell phones soon.

My question is that if there are industries where traditionally, it has always been normal to view a 2D screen, how long will it be before a major search engine jumps on the 3D bandwagon and is creating interesting new visibility strategies and opportunities right from within the SERPS in 3D?

Want to read more about the future of 3D coming soon?

SEO Recon - A Completely New World of Competitive Intelligence

SEO Recon - A Completely New World of Competitive Intelligence

Chances are that if you get advice or counsel or mentoring for example from one source - and that information turns out to be powerful and effective, that you will tend to listen to that same source. Who do you choose to listen to in a myriad of conflicting opinions? The way you make choices is entirely up to you.

Do You Remember the Movie "The Matrix" (1999)
If you have watched the original blockbuster film "The Matrix" which was released back in 1999 (it's hard to believe it was that long ago) you'll recall that in the film, there was a main character named Neo, who was forced to make a choice between taking a red pill and a blue pill. Depending on Neo's choice of color, it would change his understanding and way of seeing the world.

He made his choice and what an adventure it was, based on that choice.

Three Magical Keyword Research Tips for Exploring Wordtracker Data

3 Magical Keyword Research Tips for Exploring Wordtracker Data
By John Alexander

Sometimes, when we suddenly get serious about our research to meet a demand, that is the point we feel we absolutely must be as “logical” as possible. Thus we can stifle the creative latent potential that is lying available but dormant as we force ourselves to think logically.

Here are 3 great tips for using Wordtracker. These are a small portion from the E-book Wordtracker Magic 2.0 - Keyword Forensics for SEO.

Tip Number 1: Stop putting yourself under pressure.

When exploring Wordtracker data, you need to stop putting your research up against the clock and stop feeling like you need to be extremely logical. Release yourself from stress and treat it more like a mission of exploration. If you remove the pressure it will often make room for you to think much more creatively.

Allowing ourselves to be creative when exploring human behavior can open up huge rifts that might otherwise and often go completely undiscovered. Hang on to your hat, because as you allow yourself the liberty to be creative and reduce all of the usual stresses of a client’s expectation of high performance, there is new liberty to observe things that you might have ordinarily missed.

Tip Number 2: Stop thinking about keywords alone

I’ve said this before but you absolutely need to stop thinking about keywords! Sure you are going to discover important keyword phrases in the end result, but don’t start by going in exploring for specific keywords that are already pre-programmed into your mind because you *THINK* they are most important or you may just spend your time seeing only what everyone else sees.

When you are exploring or when you’re in “exploration mode” you want to discover the big windows of opportunity that most people hardly EVER see. Stop guessing and look at more than the first bit of data that makes the most sense.

Tip Number 3: Explore every notion that naturally comes into your mind.

Allow yourself to focus on "how people dialog with you." Think back to any conversations you’ve had recently with a customer. Can you recall that conversation? What did they say to you and how did they say it?

What did they ask you and how did they ask it. Let these ideas begin to come into your mind through a natural creative progression from one thought to the next.

Are you jumping off topic? It does not matter.
Our minds naturally go off topic when in a creative state. Let it happen.

Are you not thinking logically enough? It does not matter.

We are often not logical when we are in a creative state. Exploring true keyword data is one action in life where it actually pays not to be so formulated and logical. It takes practice, but once you are on a roll you won’t need me or anyone else to tell you that you’re finding especially and useful results. Before we get too deep in practice, I want you try the following short exercise to demonstrate something to you.

Quick Exercise:
Let’s demonstrate how your own creative mind works.
(You won’t get anything out of this, unless you actually try it yourself)

In three minutes see how many objects you can sketch out on a piece of paper, in which “a circle” is the main element within the design. Just use a few lines on the circles on the page to identify your ideas, which might start with maybe a wheel, a tire, a steering wheel, and so on.

Notice how your mind leaps from category to category.
Is it always logical? No.

For example, your exercise might start with a wheel, a tire, and a steering wheel; and then move into another new category, like a speedometer, a watch, and a clock; and then to still other items like a doughnut, a cookie, and a pizza; then make another leap to a plate, a saucer, an orange, a basketball, a pill, and so on.

Now this is a most natural response when we are being creative.

If our minds worked logically, we would exhaust every category and list hundreds of types of wheels before we moved on to clocks, and then list dozens of clocks. But instead, notice that our minds bound forward. In some small way this illustrates the leaps which have measured our progress. But recognizing that this is naturally the way the mind works, I encourage you to give yourself permission to explore Wordtracker in the same fashion.

Let your mind be free to observe landmarks along the way and then dig into those landmarks to reveal several levels of search behavior beyond what others are seeing.

Why are others not seeing what you will see?

The answer is simple. Their minds are pre-loaded, pre-programmed, and totally fixed on a “keyword hunt” for the keywords they are convinced are important. They do not understand the value of exploring what an audience of searchers truly want.

I call this limitation the “keyword hunt” mindset.

Don’t go into Wordtracker with a pre-established list of keywords that are subconsciously stored in your mind, but instead, go into Wordtracker with a clean slate. Learn how to let the tool sort all of the best data and then reveal the best windows of opportunity based on searches within the last 90 days. The above tips are a short excerpt from Wordtracker Magic Volume 2 - Keyword Forensics for SEO

25 EASY tips to help you gain top visibility in the search engines

25 tips to help you gain top visibility in the search engines:

Tip 1. Enjoy better rankings by writing higher quality content.

Did you know Google is literally rewarding well-written content the benefit of "true relevancy." All I mean to say here, is that just by becoming a better "writer" and creating higher quality content, you can benefit from certain elements that are at work behind the scenes. Strive to write better content for your visitors and it will work for you not against you.

Tip 2. How well "focused" is your content for each page you are working on?

If you try to keep very focused on one topic per page, you will do much better than having multiple topics on the same page. If your page is specifically about the "benefits of using nostalgia" as a topical reference, are you actually using the keyword phrase for example "using nostalgia" within your readable HTML text? So many times, new students of SEO forget about the importance of focus.

Tip 3. Where is the best place to get started?

One of the best places to get started is by researching your target audience's search behavior. Ultimately, you want to target the exact phrases that your ideal buying audience is using when they search. Have you heard of SEO-Sniper?
(Not the Wordpress plug in but the newest keyword research tool)

Tip 4. Once you have got your keyword research done, you need to get started right away.

Some people are so completely overwhelmed that they put off actually getting started on their Web site for far too long.

Walt Disney put it simply like this:

"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing."
Walter Disney

Of course he was not speaking about SEO but the principle still applies. Why not make a list of strategies that you like to apply on your Web site, but then take one single item and work on it immediately, until it gets done. Sometimes even the simplest of changes have significant impact and I always feel badly when I see anyone taking to long to "get started."

Tip 5. Have you heard that "link building" is important?

Perhaps you've heard that link popularity and link reputation is important. It is important, but don't become so obsessed with linking that you build your entire strategy only "just around link building." You want to use all of the basic principles to carry your Web site through and you may want to do some linking based on the look of the "competitive landscape" for your keyword phrase.

You also want to build links based on what "makes sense" for your visitors.

Some search engines like Google give more weight to elements like link reputation which is an "off-page" influence while other search engines like Yahoo will give more weight to "on-page" influences such as your keyword phrase usage and how it is used on the page.

Tip 6. Have you read Google's Webmaster guidelines?

It is good to check it from time to time as things do get updated and are subject to change.

Tip 7. What is important to Yahoo?

What does Yahoo! say it wants in a Web page?
Original and unique content of genuine value Pages designed primarily for humans, with search engine considerations secondary Hyperlinks intended to help people find interesting, related content, when applicable

Metadata (including title and description) that accurately describes the contents of a web page and good web design in general

What 14 things does Yahoo! say it does "NOT" want in a Web page?

Find out all of their guidelines here:

Tip 8. What about researching important keyword phrases in other languages?
Are you wanting to perform keyword research in other languages?
What if you are trying to find keyword research suggestions for other languages such as Spanish or French or German? Now you can research keywords in several other languages including French, Dutch, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish and Spanish at Keyword Discovery.

Check out Keyword Discovery by clicking here.

Tip 9. For effective search engine marketing, you need more than just top rankings.

Remember to include strong calls to action to compel a response from the reader.

What do you want the reader to do once they finish reading your content? You need to clearly build these options into each page and leave nothing to guess work. Describe what action you would like them to take and never assume that they will just know what to do, because they won't act unless you spell it out.

Tip 10. SEO and Cascading Style Sheets.

An understanding of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) can help you with a number of SEO work-arounds to meet challenges with complicated design issues. W3Schools provides an excellent CSS tutorial free of charge, complete with a lot of examples and quizzes.

Tip 11. Don't ever limit the search engines to only just one way of finding your pages.

Put links to new pages on your site map. Make sure you link to your site map from every page of your Web site.

If there's a corresponding page on your site that you can use to link to the new page, do so. Mention the new page on your blog. Do you have a directory associated with the particular topic dealing with the content of this new page? Add a link on that page. Just make sure that you give the search engines multiple ways to find all of your important pages.

Tip 12. How compelling are your Meta descriptions?

Are you remembering to use your important keyword phrase in the description?

Are you taking time to write unique descriptions for each of your pages?

How about a call to action?

Are you remembering to include good calls to action in your description?

Tip 13. Have you tried Fagan Finder?

This Web site has over 100 tools that you can use to dig for information on a URL. There are more nooks and crannies to this site than you can possibly imagine.

Tip 14. Do not obsess over Google Page Rank.

Did you know that a page with a high PageRank can be out ranked in the SERPs by a page with a lower PageRank? Remember that PageRank isn't the "end all" in SEO. It's only one piece of the pie.

Tip 15. Don't forget to use your keyword phrase in ALT text.

ALT text should be used only to describe images. Putting keywords in the the Alt tag to try and influence even a marginal advantage is a waste of time. Don't do it. Use every tag for the purpose in which is was specifically designed to be used by the W3C.

Tip 16. Create content that serves your customer's needs FIRST and your own needs second.

Far too often, our focus is so narrowly limited to just our own objectives for a Web page. One powerful tip is to first research the specific needs of your customer (within a niche) and then deliver up high value, based on your research and give the searcher EXACTLY whatever it is that THEY want, first.

Think about it - try it out and see what happens when you meet the client's interest first, before introducing your own objective.

Tip 17. Are you using your researched primary keyword phrase prominently in your Title Tag?

The Title Tag of your Web page is still extremely influential for relevancy in most search engines. Try using your researched phrase once, up front in your Title and remember the value of creating a compelling Title that engages the reader. Avoid stuffing your Title full of keywords and instead create a compelling Title that reads well and accents a benefit.

Tip 18. Remember that most major search engines no longer look at the your Meta keyword tag when determining relevancy.

Use moderation and be careful not to over-use any single word multiple times in your keyword Meta tag. Try and use approximately a half dozen words that are actually being used within the Web page content.

Tip 19. Do not use the same Title tags, Meta Keyword Tags and Description Tag on every page of your Web site.

Keep your Title, Keywords and Description all specific to the individual page you are working on, unless you want to get falsely flagged for duplicate content penalties.

Tip 20. Remember to use alternative synonyms sometimes instead of over using keywords.

Your Thesaurus can be your best friend or else watch this video on how you can choose semantically related keywords with the help of Wordtracker's Full Search tool.

Tip 21. Check out Robin Nobles list of 148 muscle words you can use on your Web site

Here is Robin's list of muscle or power words you can print out or save to your hard drive, words you can use on your site in your title and description tags along with your keyword phrase, and in your heading tags and your content.

Tip 22. Create content that deserves to be found within the top ranks.

One of the single most important aspects to managing your time well, is to stay focused on creating high value, original content that is useful and engaging to your visitors. What kind of content should your Web site contain?

Create content that is truly relevant (and honestly deserves to be found at the top.)Create content that serves your customer's needs FIRST and your own needs second. Create content that will meet your visitor's exact search query and satisfy it. Create content your visitor will be GLAD that they found - something of true merit.
Create content that is based on real "behaviorally based research" rather than guessing at keywords. Create content that is written for your specific visitor so that it flows smoothly and reads well to them. Create content that is original and you can feel proud to have created. Create content that has a solid, well written "call to action." Create content that is based on what a "search engine understands" through artificial intelligence (AI.)

Tip 23. Are you interested in learning how to gauge your Web site accurately and process all of the changes you need to know regardless of how competitive a keyword phrase is? Do you want to examine all of the opportunities for you to advance in visibility in the minimal number of moves? Do you want to protect your visibility by understanding who might be approaching behind you?
Here is a tool that can do an outstanding job of reporting and analytics of your exact search landscape plus tell you about all the strengths and weaknesses of your top competitors too.
Visit SEO Recon.

Tip 24. Don't forget to use optimization with your press releases.
Have you thought about optimizing some news about your business this week? You can put your news story out in front of thousands of publishers and editors through the PRweb service.

But the question is - what will your unique story angle be?

There are so many times we get so wrapped up in what our competitor is doing, we seem to forget the power and impact of taking a reverse or opposite approach.

Learn how to tell your story from a different and more interesting perspective than everyone else and your stories. Catch your audience by surprise with some genuine news and make your news story stand out in the eyes of publishers. Surprise your audience with a different approach and watch the impact it can have on your Web site. Its only news, but people love fresh ideas or a story told from an alternate approach.

Tip 25. Are you trying to increase the frequency of robot visits to your Web site?

Are you aware of the value of fresh, original content added to your Web site on a consistent basis? Of course you are.

Does it really improve the findability of your Web site? You bet it does and it increases the frequency of the Spider visits too.

5 Tips on Choosing the Right SEO Training Resources

5 Important Tips for Choosing Your SEO Skill-Building Resources
by
By John Alexander

These days there are search engine experts galore where ever you look and often there are conflicting opinions.

So how do you really select a voice from among so many voices to listen to and learn from?

Here are 5 tips to consider.

Tip 1. Choose a training organization that is already practicing what they preach.

For example, how can any organization teach you genuine SEO skills and the full scope of search engine marketing if that organization have no search engine visibility for competitive terms for them self? For example, if someone is claiming they will teach you search engine marketing, you should be able to easily find THEM in the top search results. If you can only find them in the PPC ads or Sponsored links, then how are they going to teach you on the proposed topic, if they cannot utilize it for their own company. So use wisdom in selecting from whom you will learn, because SEO these days is far to competitive for guess work. Choose a training organization who can easily be found in the organic listings for highly competitive terms.

Tip 2. Choose a training organization that will teach you more than just how to "gain rankings."

It's true that top rankings are important but what does your training company teach about the value of quality content. One of the challenges that is most common today, is that there is very little emphasis put on the value of content itself. A good educator will not just teach you how to perform optimization, but will also teach you about how to create highly engaging content that is well written and merits some true value to the reader. Learn how to create useful content that truly merits being found and satisfies the visitors initial query. Search engine marketing skills include many other topics besides optimization skills.

Tip 3. Consider "information accuracy" and information that is actually "kept up to date."

From where does your training organization get their specific SEO knowledge? Are you being taught something that is out of date or something that was collected from hearsay on some message board posted by an anonymous person. The only accurate way that you can know something is really current and true, is to test it out. Testing and research is the foundation of gaining accurate facts. As you know, search engines do change the rules often and it's important to operate based on up to date research.

Tip 4. Watch for an emphasis on skill-building rather than a reliance on SEO tools.

Of course there are some excellent tools worth knowing about, but the learning emphasis should be on understanding search engine marketing technique, manual optimization technique and building genuine skills. You need to develop your own "SEM comfort level" and a knowing that you can do the job without too much reliance on what some tool is telling you to do. It's much faster to develop your manual skills in the beginning and then add in certain tools once you have achieved your comfort level. The all important comfort level with your SEO skills is what will change the way you feel about your own abilities. By reason of use and a little practice, you'll experience new-found confidence with working on more and more competitive type of industries.

Tip 5. Find out if your training organization offers any type of ongoing support or mentoring program.
Find a training organization that practices white hat strategies. Consider checking with previous trainees to see how they are coming along with their SEO skills after training. If you see that a training school often has good repeat business, that's an excellent sign too. Many SEO professionals will come back once a year for a refresher training or just to find out the latest changes or newest strategies and bring their skills up to date.

Search Engine Academy has training centers in local communities throughout North America and Asia.

Each SEO Training Academy teaches you more than just how to do traditional best practices. It's personalized instruction plus ongoing mentoring that help you get your skills up to speed in minimal time.

Nothing works as well as when you can learn "by doing."

John

6 Tips About How Search Engine Spiders Work

6 Tips About How Search Engine Spiders Work
By John Alexander

Over the years there has been a lot of confusion about SEO and how search engines work. One of the things that comes up all the time is the subject of search engine spiders or as they are sometimes called search engine robots.

When a search engine robot visits your Web page, it is important to understand a few things if you are hoping to get your Web page indexed. Search Engine Robots are simply software programs that come out to your Web page, capture certain data and then return that data to the search engine from where it came.

Do Search Engines "see" your entire Web site as a whole collection of pages or do you think they only see the whole world as a collection of individual pages?

Actually, the truth is neither "if you are thinking" based on how a search engine robot sees the world.

Think about this now. A search engine robot does not see a world of pages or a world of Web sites.

A search engine sees its world made up only of URLs or (Uniform Resource Locators.)

This is one reason why search engine spiders cannot some times find their way out of what is called a Spider Trap. For example in some dynamic sites, you will often have variable strings at the end of a URL that are session identifiers and while the URL may be unique, the search engine does not realize it may be on exactly the same page over and over in a loop and may not be able to get out.
Do search engine spiders help determine what your rankings are? This is another wrong idea that some people have. The search engine spider has one sole job and that is just to crawl content capture certain information and links and take it back to the main search engine.
How smart are search engine spiders?

The answer is they just are not very smart at all. They cannot think.

In fact most search engine spiders are updated very rarely with some powerful new feature. The reason why is because as most technology advances, the demands on a SE robot remain the same basically. They still only do exactly the same job they have always done. There are some spiders that are a little better than others at being more thorough and crawling more complexly.

But all things considered, why keep rebuilding something if what you have now works great?

Tips you should be aware of with spiders, crawlers and SEO and search engine optimization:

1. A spider is designed to crawl the Web. The smartest way to keep spiders consistently coming back to visit, is to focus on content freshness. Add new articles, pages, FAQs, good useful information to your Web site on a consistent basis - instead of doing major updates. Instead of adding 20 new articles all at once, try adding only 1 article a day (everyday) and watch what happens.

2. You do not need to include a robots revisit tag to your HTML. It does not work and the robot will come back more consistently with you adding fresh content, you may see it stay longer and actually dig deeper into your Web site.

3. Do you want to know one reason why Blogs are so busy and actively crawled by the spiders? It's because Blogs are often very fresh content sometimes being updated several times per day.

4. Remember that spiders and crawlers do NOT need to be submitted to for them to find you. There are actually good reasons not to use submission software but you are wiser to link to a new site from a Blog or another site that you know is already being indexed. Remember that you will still need to submit to directories though because there, you are dealing with human editors and not robots.

5. Make sure your Web site has a nice Site Map and then have at least one link to your site map on every page. Matt Cutts has said for example that this is one of the things that people most often forget. Remember, you have no idea whether a search engine spider will come in on your home page, or on your about us page or maybe even a policy page. But regardless of which way it comes in, it will be able to crawl ALL of your pages if you've created a good site map.

6. Do you think that it is best to get into Google immediately as quickly as you can? Think about it for a minute. With Google, off page factors are VERY important.

Suppose Google's search engine robot visits you right away. But unfortunately, none of the other search engines have visited your page so even if you have some good links, nobody really knows it. Perhaps you need to think of a reverse approach and first submit to a few free or paid directories. Then you could begin
getting your page indexed by some of the other spiders first, then finally when Google comes in it sees some nice off page factors and link reputation for which it will reward you for.

Relating to our neighbors in a tight economy

Greetings all,

I'm speaking with a different voice tonight (for those who can relate.)

I've recently had an an acquaintance lose their home.

A home that I know they invested substantial funds into renovations. It was not someone that I really knew very well or even someone with whom I was related to. But they were working hard to survive.

It is very sad to hear the news when it hits close to home and someone you know.

The Canadian government seems rather mixed up with the idea of elections these days. Income rates are deflating and the economy is moving toward Deflation, but why even waste the taxpayers money to hold an election (with all the expenses thereof,) and why have a vote, if a "coalition" can come in and usurp authority (several weeks after the vote has been completed.)

Times we are living in are getting stranger and stranger.

Yet somehow, I still have great encouragement that if we can can hang together, help each other and stick to some old fashioned values, there can be great promise. Not everything we read in the media rings quite true.

I visit the US a lot and my friends in the US seem also rather shaky about the future (and the challenges to come.)

Think about this...

I wonder if more of us need to just stop and look back on the good things (call them interventions)or whatever that have occurred in the past. Go ahead and think about a few things right now. Count your own blessings. I've been celebrating Thanksgiving in my own way, over the last several days. I don't think it ever hurts to count your blessings and even with the toughest economic or political issues that we have looming. There is a way. There is a better way.

Look around and pay attention to your neighbors, who may just need a little help.

Why not invest in each other. Why not hang tight together. We are all in the same boat in the end. Pay attention to the opportunities to help a friend or neighbor, BEFORE the bank calls in their foreclosure.

I'll get back to Internet marketing shortly. But remember that life is all about people. Business is about profit, but you need to do both.

Be encouraged in all your studies and please keep in touch.

John Alexander

Highly Accurate Keyword Research Tool Delivers Great Insight

Welcome to the KEI Observation Deck,

Let me tell you about a fairly new tool that few people know about because it is so new and we have mainly been telling our own SEO students about it first.

If you are interested in learning about an alternative tool that is now available, which allows you to research actual Google data using a "much improved" KEI score, plus it measures many of the on page factors like keyword usage in:
-H1
-link text
-body text
-keyword density
-keyword prominence
-plus the timing and magnitude of traffic spikes.

It then assigns a difficulty score so you know exactly how hard or easy the optimization will be based on all these factors.

Most people have not seen this tool because it is so new.
Now you can research keyword phrases much more accurately
than ever before. This tool at least 10 times the accuracy
that other tools do, because it measures so much more than
just KEI.

On the down side, it takes a little while to run, so if you have a huge list of keywords, you might let it run in the evening and grab the results in the morning.

On the very positive side, it is deadly accurate and gives you exceptional data which you can then sort by KEI or difficulty score or by traffic spikes or sort by popularity etc.

It is not called "SEO Sniper" for nothing.
(It's not related to the SEO Sniper Plug in for Wordpress either.)

More info about SEO Sniper here.
