SEO Tip to Reveal Your Competitors Top Keywords

Remember that if you are getting started in Affiliate marketing it's
important when choosing a product or service to promote that you add
something original into the mix.

Bring something of value, that others have never thought about. If
you just use the same resources that everyone else is using, then
it's much harder to make the sale.

Example:

Assuming you had a Web site trying to sell animation software.
Why not add some useful tips that would focus on teaching the new
artist some important technique or maybe even offer a short video?

You might offer a short video demonstrating:

--how to build up the element of "anticipation" when drawing
cartoon characters.
--or how you can use some feature of the software you are promoting
to add exaggeration (for humor.)
--or perhaps you demonstrate some helpful short cuts for saving time

Bring something to the offer that is complimentary and useful.

Gain Stable Top Web Visibility to Your Most Correct Audience

Gain Stable Top Web Visibility to Your Most Correct Audience

Typically, traditional "SEO best practices" are a set of guidelines
that you follow to help you create very focused topic specific
pages which then appear in top places within the search results.

Some of the very basic influences include instances of your
researched keyword phrase used in places such as:

- Title tag

- Description META tag

- Keyword META tag

- Header tags

- Body text

- Link text

- Keyword prominence

- Keyword relevancy

- Keyword proximity

- Link popularity** (off-page factor)

- Link reputation** (off-page factor)

- Keyword Density

- Etc..etc

These are by no means the entire list. Google currently has about
200 different factors that contribute to relevancy of a Web page.

The Traditional SEO Challenge:

Traditionally, the search engine optimizers challenge, tends to be to focus on these types of things in general, but then the exact
elements that they apply can vary tremendously.

Of course, various tools have been used to try to identify the
important factors by percentage. Some newsletters and resources try
to tell you how the algorithm is changing each month. For example, you might read somewhere that your Keyword Density must be 2% and your Title Tag needs a percentage keyword weight and you must have so many characters included. Of course each month, the resource will tell you how much things have changed and therefore you get caught in the trap of "algorithm chasing."

Chasing algorithms from month to month is NOT the answer.

So as hard as you try, it never seems to work for you. So then often, some folks will work hard for days or sometimes weeks and even months - making tiny changes and fine tuning and "tweaking the source code" until the pages would move higher and higher.

Where the challenge is in this traditional process, (which is still
the way many professional optimization companies work) is that you
have a huge time element.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of success stories for businesses
that have operated in this fashion. (If you don't mind the huge gaps in time doing guess work.)

Time is money, they say, and with SEO skills, it's true too.

If you can do the same job and optimize a page correctly the very
first time, then you begin to also reap the business and the profit
much sooner too.

Gain Stable Top Web Visibility to Your Most Correct Audience

You may be asking what methodology will enable a search engine
optimizer to do the job correctly the first time?

Not only does it exists, but it works extremely well too!

It's an extraordinary SEO methodology based on much more powerful
precise and exact way of measuring accuracy in measuring all the
influences correctly (the very first time.)

It abolishes the weeks and months of tweaking and guess work.

We began to introduce this type of methodology throughout our
network of Search Engine Academies and Search Engine Workshops this
year and student graduates have been having highly significant
success. Here's a note just in from one of our July 2009 Students:

------------

"Dear Robin & John, I just wanted to thank you for all the
information. I have seen major results in the last couple of weeks
from a few things that I have implemented so far.

Previously we weren't found in the search engines. We now are in
the number 1 spot. The result has been a major increase in traffic
in our retail store. I am also working on other pages and should
have a series for you to take a look at soon. Thanks for a great
informative workshop!"

Cindy Stewart - Orlando SEO Workshop Graduate

Read dozens more SEO student success stories here.

-------------

Imagine taking a little break and having EVERYTHING you know about
SEO truth shaken up.

Imagine every bit of advice you ever heard (good or bad) just cast
up into the air. Then as you take a little time with us to explore,
each piece of information falls back into perfect place. But in a
perfectly fitting order.

What is the main difference before and after a Workshop?

The major difference is that now you are equipped understand the
SEO puzzle precisely, with a marvelous process for exact SEO
accuracy.

What does this mean to you?

It means you will no longer look at SEO as a trial and error
process ever again.

What is this worth to you?

You'll know how to measure and get at the exact truth each time you
work on any Web page. You can acquire this SEO skills training and
methodology at any Search Engine Academy in your local Business
community.

Just be sure to check and verify that it is a Search Engine Academy
or Search Engine Workshop listed on this page:
http://www.searchengineworkshops.com/workshop_dates.html

I should point out that this methodology for SEO exactness has
nothing to do with "reverse engineering" an algorithm. That's the
beauty of it. You are enabled and equipped to compete and be found
by your most correct audience and (of course) it's 100% white hat.

10 keyword research tips to find "new windows of opportunity" without "hunting for keywords."

10 More keyword research tips to find "new windows of opportunity" without "hunting for keywords."

* Use Wordtracker for exploring the conditions that exist in peoples lives that cause them to use the Internet in the way that they do. Ready for a paradigm shift?. Grab the e-book Keyword Forensics

* Have you ever thought about attracting in a new audience based on their interests and needs FIRST instead of being always focused on your objectives. Every Web page should have an objective to be fulfilled but sometimes you can get tremendous conversion if you put your objective to the back. It does not have to come first. Stop and go back and consider meeting the visitor's needs FIRST then offer them something that compliments their circumstance or provides a solution to their circumstance.

* How about optimizing a page for a specific Web based tool? Not just mortgage calculators, but literally any kind of tool, that will help them with a decision, a solution or something useful. If they are searching for a specific "tool" why should they not be using yours?

* Think about the conditions that exist in peoples lives that cause them to "search" the way they do.

What about all of the people who have financial challenges?
What about the people who live alone in this world who are dying from loneliness?
Or how about the folks who are suffering from a specific medical condition?
What about the people who are in the midst of mortgage foreclosure?

Do you have solutions for certain situations? Think about the conditions that you could help people solve. Be found for them and create magnificent content that reads well and meets their needs and don't forget your call to action.

* Consider researching "dialogue patterns." Did you know that we often communicate differently when we speak to each other, than when we are writing an article or creating content. Some of the simplest, plain, every day (even boring little phrases) and words we use when we dialogue with each other, can open up amazing new possibilities for traffic. Pay attention when your customers are talking to you and consider exactly, the words they use to speak to you. Try using some of those words as single "root" words to explore search behavior.

***It'll take you time to catch on to this tip because our brains our automatically attracted to the words we "think" sound important and we cannot see how some little acronym or boring sounding expression could ever help reveal anything. Don't miss the boat.

* Have you ever thought about exploring hot subject matter? Think more about the "topics" your customers are interested in discussing or learning about in general. People are interested in all types of causes and concerns from religion and politics to statistical data and news. People like to analyze things and discuss things that relate to their industry. Don't limit yourself to thinking that you can only optimize your Web pages to 3 or 4 keyword phrases because you "think" they are all that exist.

* Remember to exploring and research opportunities by researching specific colors. Color is a big deal in some industries.

* Consider exploring topics related to specific seasons, which may be appropriate for your Web audience.

* Try researching common acronyms related to your industry to open up more "unexplored data."

Make sure you are not mixing up acronyms between industries though. Did you know there are over 100 different related meanings to the common acronym we refer to as SEO? And many of these do not relate to the search engine industry. Try using Acronym Attic to check on the meanings for SEO.

* If you have not heard this World Talk Radio Interview on Keyword Forensics, you may listen to the archive to hear me speaking about researching behaviors for real estate and other competitive industries.

In Summary:

Remember that your researching behaviors and finding those niche trends greatly eliminates stress on the new SEO and allows you to compete for easy phrases that draw genuine traffic, but without the enormous competition from the crowds who are all targeting exactly the same phrase because they are guessing at the words rather than exploring the evidence that is readily available.

There are big differences in little phrase clusters that are well worth exploring.

Give yourself the liberty to stop " hunting for keywords" and go exploring the wealth of data in an illogical manner. Although you need to understand which keyword phrases to target, we need to stop guessing at keywords and instead, learn how to quickly explore the search data with alternative points of view that reveals those niche opportunities quickly

LSI and Natural Language Processing Truths

There has been much discussion lately about content relevancy and the relationship between Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and search engine optimization. Some say LSI has nothing to do with how Google scores pages. Others hail LSI as a powerful method of optimizing or theming your content and leads to marked improvement in natural search results.

Before proceeding, it is important to point out that there is much confusion and misconception in the SEO industry with regard to LSI. Within the industry among the typical SEO professional, the term LSI is used quite pervasively but also quite loosely. Almost any technology that a search engine might use to aid in the process of determining the meaning of content gets labeled as LSI. The way most in the world of SEO use LSI has really become a catch all term for any technology used for the purpose of semantic analysis.

We asked SEO educator and semantics expert, Michael Marshall to address the topic and help separate the facts from fiction about LSI and Natural Language Processing.

Please read his full article called:

SEO, Latent Semantic Indexing and Natural Language Processing

Here is a little more on Michael's qualification to address the topic:

Michael also holds degrees in Linguistics and Philosophy from the University of Maryland. He is a contributing author to SEOToday.com, the premier website for SEO professionals. He is the author of the E-book, "Checkmating the Search Engines" and creator of highly acclaimed, online SEO tool, "Theme Master" - the search engine themes analyzer. Mike is owner of the Search Engine Academy of North Carolina.

Michael is a licensed instructor at the North Carolina Search Engine Academy. He has also recently become an instructor on search engine technologies for the U.S. Patent Office.

What do others say about Michael Marshall's qualifications?

"Mike is one of the most insightful technologists in the organic search optimization industry. The tools invented under Mike's watch at Fortune Interactive are unmatched in sophistication. In addition to his technical acumen, Mike is an extremely responsible and reliable person--someone you can count on. I can heartily recommend Mike for any technical or technical management position."

- Mike Moran
Distinguished Engineer and Product Manager of IBM's OmniFind Search Product

-------------------

"Mike Marshall is literally one of the brightest minds in the world of Search Engines and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). With a degree in Linguistics that allowed him to absorb concepts like Latent Semantic Indexing and then apply his programming skill, Mike has a grasp on the science (both theoretical and applied) of search engines like few others do. Among many unique qualities Mike has, is his unassuming and open approach to sharing his knowledge with his clients. He doesn't "hold back" to save something for the next contract. When you ask Mike a question he gives you an answer. The right one. I don't know of another person in the world of SEO whose knowledge I trust more than Mike Marshall."

7 Tips For Starting Your New SEO Business

7 Tips For Starting Your New SEO Business
By John Alexander

One of the subjects our workshop attendees always seem to enjoy
is training on how to set up your own SEO business from scratch.
We spend time teaching them about ways they can build their new
clients by focusing on making those clients successful. One of
the things any new SEO needs to remember is the importance of
not just taking on new contracts, but ensuring that each of their
new contracts is well aligned for success. When building your brand
new business, ultimately what you are striving to build is your
"reputation for getting people great results". This usually
results in more referral business each time you help some company
increase their visibility, attract the ideal target audiences or
help improve the client's Web site conversion factor (turning
visitors into buyers).

Without a doubt there are a variety of ways you can build your
new SEO business quickly, so lets just touch on a few simple
pointers.

i) Customers need GENUINE results.

Make this an early part of your training and develop skills that
will address at least the following two areas (which are a must
for success).

a) Build your SEO skills to where you can bring top visibility
to the client's ideal target audience.

b) Learn how to write copy that compels the visitor to "respond."
A number 1 rank even for the right keyword phrase will not
truly benefit your client unless you also know how to compell
that initial response.

Attracting the ideal target audience within the top search results
only has value, ONCE the visitor takes action. It is a combination
of these 2 elements that truly is the beginning of your client's
online business. One without the other, is of no true value but
together they bring success.

ii) Be selective about who you take on as a client.
It's easy to sell SEO but you need to keep your focus on those
businesses that convert to success easily. Examine the markets
through behavioral and keyword research and determine that each
prospect you take on has a strong chance for success BEFORE you
agree to take them on.

For example, you may want to avoid taking on a client who wants
to sell some common product that can be bought on any street
corner or that appears to have no proven market online. You want
to assist customers who, through your due diligence and
advanced behavioral research you can already identify that their
marketplace exists online for sure. You see it because you do some
research first, before taking them on as a client.

Being selective about who you take on as a client means that you
are choosing your prospects based on their potential for success
and not just because they want to hire you!

iii) Learn how to separate your service from the competition.
Sure you perform search engine marketing, but so do many other
firms. Separating yourself based on the fact that you do possess
the skills to get genuine results is pretty big in itself. This
may separate you from a load of others who "talk the SEO talk"
but don't really know how to deliver. Remember, the reason the
client hires you in the first place is usually because they need
someone they can trust. So how else can you separate yourself
from the local competition? What other value will you provide,
that most others do not. The answers here are wide ranging if you
put on your lateral thinking cap.

These don't have to be complex solutions but they should deliver
some genuine value. They also need to be included in your skill
set so as you think of ways to add value to your service, make
sure you have build the skills required to deliver. I could
probably give you about 2 dozen ideas right off the top of my
head but these need to be service offerings that are right for
you. Would you be willing to offer services to give client's
exposure into major news feeds? How about a service where you
monitor the client's competition? Some folks are fascinated
with the competition and love this idea. How about helping the
client with things like exposure in industry specific e-zines?
Helping them get more business out of their current customers?
How about services to offer them professionally written press
releases? How about offering them a quarterly watchdog service
to identify the hottest new search trends for new products they
could be marketing?

If none of these sound exciting you, there are dozens of other
ideas you could explore and remember, these are also all profit
centers where you can make some income.

If you like these ideas and want more, consider coming to one of
our live SEO Mastery Workshops sometime...we'll get you into the
lateral thinking mode and show you how to make your new SEO
business profitable in one of our brainstorming group sessions

iv). Learn how to communicate the value of your services to the
client.

Give it some thought, do a little brainstorming and you will find
there are lots of ways you can help your client truly realize
the value of what you do. From how you explore their marketplace
to come up with original custom strategies to how you help them
understand SEO as a process rather than some mystical, mysterious,
black art which we all know it is not. How you help your client
realize and benchmark their progress is essential and the secret
is all in how you communicate.

v). Once you have a comfort level with the client, why not
join in the fun. For the right market, you might help
the client grow in exchange for a share in the profits.

If your skills are medium to above average, why not share in the
profits yourself. I am referring to offering someone a vertical
contract. This would be a deal where you own part of the company
in return for making it successful with your SEO skills. Don't
brush this off. There are some exceptional deals to be had if you
start thinking laterally. Also explore the possibility of teaching
the client about effective affiliate marketing.

Vi) Practice customer service excellence.

It's not just about handling your client's technical challenges.
One of the biggest loopholes in the Internet marketing and SEO
business, is lack of "quality customer service."

Do you return their calls? Do you look after their questions
promptly? Do you keep them apprised about the newest trends?

vii) Manage Your Client's Expectations well.

Success Principle: Teach your client's the truth and learn to
manage your client's expectations. If you deliver above average
results and communicate well, you will have a client for a
lifetime. There is nothing quite so powerful for building client
loyalty as offering a legitimate SEO service.

In Conclusion:

The single most important focus to keep in mind when starting
your new SEO business is that of making every single customer
a true success story.

The result of doing this has the impact of building your reputation
very quickly. Word of mouth is very quick where true "success stories"
are concerned and each merchant or client you help, will ultimately
contribute to building you a great reputation and will usually
always result in additional referral business.

3. Grab a Free SEO Tip of the Day

Here is a tip for some of the newer readers I've been speaking to
recently. One of the single most important aspects of gaining your
SEO comfort level is to exercise your skills by reason of use
(or practice.)

The easiest way to do this is to create a few of your own high
quality informational sites and you can make money at the same time
with affiliate marketing. I want to encourage you in this direction
because it will set you free in terms of proving to yourself that
you CAN do it. The sooner the better.

Too often you have the new SEO student focused on selling (before
they know for a fact) that they can make a huge impact with their
skills. Everything in good protocol and logical order order.

Do what you need to to prove to yourself you can do the job and
then you'll be ready to offer consultation or take on clients.

Stop Wasting Time with PPC - "Time is Money"

First let me say that this is not a negative point about PPC or Pay Per Click. But the fact is, "time really is money." Regardless of whether you are doing organic search engine optimization or whether you are doing paid advertising such as Pay Per Click.

Anything that saves you "time" will in fact save you "money."

When it comes to PPC, there are a lot of folks losing money. In fact more folks lose money on PPC than ever make money. However, some people are making very good money with PPC advertising in the last little while.

Let me ask you this question?

Could you use a solution to automatically:

--Increase PPC Quality Scores and lower minimum bid prices?
--Increase your sales and conversions?
--Roll out "super relevant" PPC ad campaigns as quickly and as often
as you want too?
--Have a solution that works with with all the top search engines?
--Discover a way that takes all the guesswork out of creating
profitable Adwords and PPC campaigns.

Yet, this is something that is so simple it will work even for beginners?

Here is something that can literally triple your targeted traffic,
improve your quality score, lower your cost per click and leave your
competition wondering what happened.

If you haven't had a look yet, visit this page for a look now

No it's not real "magic" - it just works like magic! Every time I
find something that is simple and yet works, I'm going to let you
know about it.

SEO, Latent Semantic Indexing and Natural Language Processing

SEO, Latent Semantic Indexing and Natural Language Processing

There has been much discussion lately about content relevancy and the relationship between Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) and search engine optimization.

Some say LSI has nothing to do with how Google scores pages.

Others hail LSI as a powerful method of optimizing or theming your
content and leads to marked improvement in natural search results.

To address this, please read this recent article by SEO educator and
Semantics expert, Michael Marshall:

E-mail Tips - When is the best day to e-mail?

Think you know the best day and time to send your email newsletter?
Ever wonder if your fellow email marketers are all sending at the same time you do?

Convinced your open rate is too low (or amazingly high)?

Some recent statistics pulled from all AWeber users may help you answer these questions:

If you’re sending HTML emails, you probably use your open rate to help gauge your success.

Even though it’s not a perfect measure of whether people are actually opening and reading your emails, it’s useful as a relative measure:
If it goes up over a short period of time, more people are probably reading. If it falls over a short period of time, it’s almost certain fewer people are reading.

Plus, all other things being equal, it can give you some motivation (if your open rates are lower than other senders’) or satisfaction (if your rates are higher).

So, here goes...

Average Open Rate Last Month: 13.6%

When Is/Was The Best Day To Send?

Some people say on Monday people are just catching up from the weekend, and that on Tuesday morning you’ll have their undivided attention before they jump into their work for the upcoming week.

Do the numbers back up that theory?
Let’s see.
The breakdown of open rates by day of the week according to Aweber:

Monday - 13.67%
Tuesday - 13.21%
Wednesday -14.07%
Thursday - 14.52%
Friday - 13.25%
Saturday - 12.09%
Sunday - 13.26%

Last month, Tuesday was actually the second-worst day to send, at least if you’re measuring by "open rates."

Does that mean you should change to Thursdays?

Please, don’t drastically change your sending times/days just because you see that the average last month, or any month, happened to be higher on a different day or time.

Don’t break with your readers’ expectations just to try to follow the latest day of the week stats. You might actually reduce your open rate by doing so.

You might eventually be able to shift your sending schedule, or split test some broadcasts, but if you up and move everything, you may throw off subscribers who are used to hearing from you at the usual time.

So what is the best action to take?

If everyone switches their sending schedule to send on say, Thursday, then recipients will start getting a ton of email that day, and start paying less attention to each individual email.

Open rates aren’t the be-all, end-all of email metrics. They don’t guarantee that people are reading your emails, only that they have images turned on and that they probably saw your email for at least a moment.

Plus, there’s always room for improvement, right?

Some ideas that can help you raise your open rates:

-Ask people to add you to their address books. Some email programs will display images from senders who are in the recipient’s contact list.

-Add a picture of yourself to your emails, near/next to your signature. People like seeing your smiling face, and if they see it in one of your emails, they may be more likely to turn on images to see it again later.

-There’s a pretty good chance you’re not testing as much as you could, or even as much as you might like to.

Would you like to do more split testing and accurately build your subscriber volumes and your reader retention rates?

Many thanks to Justin Premick for the insider tips above.

We've been using the Aweber system for years and give it a great recommendation for one of the best sequential auto responders with top support and all of the tools you need are built right into it.

So you you've ran out of "quotes" to attract traffic

Let's talk about what types of "quotes" can attract traffic.

As you may know, the higher the KEI value is - often represents the easier your optimization job will be. Traditionally, people have looked for KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) values of 400 or more to represent a good to excellent keyword phrase opportunity.

Or a phrase that is being searched fairly often, but does not have astronomical competition. One of the things that people look up on the Internet are "famous quotes" by genre such as inspirational quotes, religious quotes, sports related quotes or historical quotes etc.

By finding some good quotes and including them relevantly into your topical content you can increase your traffic as well as attract new readers. Today, we'll dip into Wordtracker's member area to see what types of specific quotes have high KEI values of 400 (or much higher.)

Get ready, let's see how many "quotes" we can dig out
in about 4 minutes:

"famous quotes about sisters" KEI 425.0

"cute sister quotes" KEI 479.5

"famous quotes on training" KEI 595.1

"famous quotes from the 4th of july" KEI 722.0

"funny ronald reagan quotes" KEI 962.1

"daughter quotes about mothers" KEI 1,041.0

"inspirational quotes by famous women athletes" KEI 1262.0

"quotes for lost loved ones" KEI 1,776.0

"headstone quotes" KEI 1790.0

"quotes about mother and daughter relationships" KEI 1880.0

"quotes for someone special" KEI 1,931.0

"daughter to father poems quotes" KEI 2,157.0

"who quoted absence makes the heart grow fonder" KEI 7,396.0

Okay, times up - but there are tons more high KEI phrases based on quotes that you can research in Wordtracker.

Original Content Freshness is Still Hot with Google

What does Google have to say about Web sites that contain little
or no original content?

Read it here:
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66361

Just a reminder tip that there are genuine benefits to updating your site frequently with fresh, original content that
has genuine value for your readers.

Your content needs to be fresh for your visitors or you're not
giving them a reason to come back.

Your content also needs to be fresh for the search engines. If the
search engines see that you're refreshing your content every day or
several times a week, the engines will spider your site much more
often.

How to Put a Unique Perspective on Your News

When it comes to generating unique news, or turning your latest news
into a "news worthy story," try and learn how to tell your story
from a completely different and more interesting perspective.

One thing that is interesting to study, is how other very successful
marketers made their stories unique.

I'm not just talking about studying your competition, but for example
it can be helpful to study the work of others even from before the
Internet even existed.

Its only news, but people love fresh ideas or a story told from an
alternate approach. My friend Evan Carmichael has recently just
published a story about the early beginnings of HJ Heinz, who once
said:

"To do a common thing, uncommonly well - will bring success."

What do you think you can learn his success and apply it to the
work you do today? Please read

Read How Henry J. Heinz built HJ Heinz by having different ideas.

Wishing you great continued success for your online business.

Replace your "Panic Button" with fresh skills

When your search engine rankings fluctuate, or even if your site
drops from the rankings, what does it mean?

Understand that these things are going to appear to happen much more often and they WILL happen to you.

What you DON'T want to do is make any immediate changes to your Web pages because of fluctuations in the rankings or because your site drops out of the rankings.

Now is the time to replace your "panic button." Replace that Panic Button with up-to-date "understanding" and refresh your skills with all of the latest information we have for you.

Remember that this year, rankings in the "traditional sense" of
the top 10 will be far less important because of the effect of
"personalization of search" which is already happening.

Far too many people PANIC in the short term, when they would be
wiser to just take it easy and not start making changes so quickly.

If you need help to understand exactly how things are changing most recently then remember to visit your local Search Engine Academy in a local community near you.

More Tips on Linking - Does Google Count PDF Links?

An internal link is an in-coming link from within your own site and
although it does not have as much weight as an external in-coming
link, it still can help.

The Google PR of your internal pages help with internal linking and,
therefore, the way you pass and distribute Google PR throughout
your site via absolute vs. relative URLs does have a small influence
on ranking.

It is always still important to link within your own site in a way
that makes sense to your visitors and not just with search engines
in mind only.

A question that recently came up was this:

If an incoming link to a site is listed in the
footer of an ebook and is in a PDF doc, is that
link read as an incoming link with Google?

Search Engine Academy Associate Educator Michael Marshall
answered the question as follows:

"Google does count links in PDF files as incoming links."

See the following Google search example:
link:www.adobe.com filetype:pdf

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS238US238&q=
link%3Awww.adobe.com+filetype%3Apdf&btnG=Search

This search combines 2 operaters;

the link: operator and
filetype: operator.

Searching for links to www.adobe.com that are only in PDF documents.
The results of the search prove beyond any doubt the answer provided
is correct. "Google does count links in PDF files as incoming links."

Thanks to Mike Marshall on this tip.
Michael is the associate SEO educator for Search Engine Academy in North Carolina. And Michael will also be teaching portions of the Advanced SEO Workshop in Philadelphia this month.

Quick SEO Link Tip

Go through your site and look for links where the link text is useless
for "link reputation" to your site.

For example, are you using links that use the phrase "More Info"? Or,"Click here"?

Try adding your keyword phrase to those short sentences in this
manner: "More info on ." This will help build your
internal link reputation and link popularity.

Remember the 80/20 rule for topic drift as well.
8o% of the time stay focused on your primary phrase...
20% allow for some variance using synonyms and
semantically related terms.

Tips on Keyword Research

What types of root words tend to be more telling than others
with comprehensive research?

Look at phrases and terms that are "action related" for looking up
examples. For instance if you remove the subject from the action
you may discover totally unrelated (but valuable) data.

Example: Uses of a sales presentation.

Take only the term "uses of" as you root word to see what other
examples people are looking for...

"Use of Miss Ms in Titles" KEI 784.0

"Use Of Mercury In WWII" KEI 1936.0

"Use of Test Tube in Laboratory" KEI 2401.0

"Uses of Mood Color" KEI 3841.0

Questions and Answers on Keyword Research Accuracy

Here are a few more Questions and Answers on Keyword Research:

Question:

Can you tell me how a phrase that has no competing pages
can have such a low KEI. I have found many phrases that have a low
KEI and little or no competing pages.

Answer:

Each keyword phrase performs differently against its own
search landscape depending on the competitiveness of the industry.

So, use KEI as a quick method to bring the best windows of
opportunity to the top, but that's all. Then forget about KEI and
start focusing on how competitive the phrase is AND how useful the
phrase is.

Can the phrases you are considering actually be used intelligently
and relevantly in your content? KEI is just a mathematical equation
that you can use to quickly sort results so (which can save you
hours of sifting.) As a rule the higher the KEI, the easier your job
will be.

2 new improvements just announced by Google

Google just announced yesterday, that they are rolling out two new improvements to Google search.

The first offers an expanded list of useful related searches and the second is the addition of longer search result descriptions -- both of which help guide users more effectively to
the information they need.

Here is a snippet:
"Starting today, we're deploying a new technology that can better
understand associations and concepts related to your search, and
one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful
related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at
the top, of the search results page)."

Read Google's full story here:

What does this mean?

This feature in the refinement of the search results highlights an
even greater importance of accurately identifying and using words
related to your primary targeted keyphrase in your content and links.

For helping you to instantly discover which secondary supporting
terms are MOST important based on a search engine's artificial
intelligence check out this new tool:

Examples of Semantics related to "antique furniture"

If we want to consider MORE than synonyms, but all words that a search engine "thinks" are related to "antique furniture" then consider a few of these:

I did not get these from the Thesaurus, but they are definetely related to the phrase "antique furniture" based on a search engine's natural language processing:

walnut
oak
mahogany
porcelain
reproduction
eighteenth century
commodes
paintings
asian furniture
Carving
styles
rustic
glassware
plus a lot more.

It's easy to see how choosing secondary supporting words and working them into your Web copy can help you create more relevancy by using terms based on what the search engine "understands" rather than just using a Thesaurus.

Where I got the semantically related words was out of Wordtracker's FULL SEARCH function. Full Search will give you lists of words related to the keyword phrase you enter.

These words make great suggestions for modifying your content by mildly re-writing it using words that make sense to Googles AI.

When you are building links into your site from other locations, you want your links to be focused on your primary keyword phrase about 80% of the time. Then about 20% of the time you want to use these types of supporting terms where it makes sense and reads well.

Remember, that you never want your linking strategy to looked contrived. The technical term for this 20% variance is called "topic drift." Next, perhaps you want to examine your Web page in a whole new light of Natural Language Processing.

Semantics for SEO - About secondary supporting terms

When you look at how intelligently search results are returned, sometimes it may be enough to convince you that a search engine has intelligence. In a certain way, it does.

Regardless of how intelligent the search results "appear to be," the search engine cannot really "think" like a human being does.

However, a complex process known as NLP or "Natural Language Processing" and Latent Semantic indexing comes into play so that whenever any content is considered by a search engine using AI, the search engine forms it's "understanding" of the meaning of words and the semantics of word associations based on the body of all of the entire data that it has collected on the Web.

This may include Blogs and even real world news.

The best way to think about "supporting terms" is this.

Secondary supporting keyword terms that a search engine "understands" are directly related through its "artificial intelligence." These may be synonyms, but they also may be other word relationships too.

Watch this short video about how you can discover the words that are semantically related to your primary phrase, based on what a search engine "understands" about your topic.

How to find truly related Synonyms to your keywords

SEO Tips for REALTORS and Real Estate Professionals

If you are in the Real Estate Industry, you are in a highly competitive industry that will require some leading edge thinking when it comes to SEO skills and search engine marketing.

At Search Engine Workshops, Robin Nobles and I have been teaching SEO skills to REALTORS now for over 7 years. Search engine marketing is a process of several important elements combined together.

As you shift your focus to serve the searcher's need first, before going after your own "business objectives," you are accomplishing and implementing one of the most powerful uses of a Web site, ever.

You are creating a Web property that ultimately will be used to assist you in forming genuine, "relationships" with your ideal buying or selling visitor audience.

Please learn to look beyond just hunting for keywords. Look beyond SEO and look beyond top rankings. Life is all about forming relationships with your customers and helping them with solutions that make a difference.

If you invest early in your own education then it'll save you hundreds of hours of time from learning the hard way.

Learn how to use your real estate Web site for

1. Gaining genuine visibility for the right type of data within the
top results of the search engines.

Ask any real estate professional the value of knowing exactly what
their customer is looking for. Is it really MLS listings? You might
be surprised these days to see how people are searching
the Internet for "cost of living comparisons" or "crime statistics"
or even just where the local Churches are located.

2. Satisfy the reason why the visitor searched.

Visibility without the right method to contact you now is a waste
of time. Does your Web site generate response and leads
and customer contacts? If not, we can help.

3. Learn how to compel your visitors to respond to what they
experience.

Your Web site needs to dialog with your prospect and give them
a certain comfort level with you the real estate professional.
Do you know if all of the right pieces are in place to do this
in the minimal amount of time?

4. Use your Web site ultimately as a lead generator and to fashion
genuine relationships.
A genuine relationship means communications that are useful and
helpful and will keep the prospective home buyer number 1 at all
times. The benefit - A lifetime customer who will always come to
you first for real estate advice.

5. Learn what is important to your online searchers through visitor
behavior.
There is nothing else as powerful as understanding the conditions
in your customers life that cause them to search the way they do.

Are you looking for real valuable assistance in search engine marketing? You need look no further than your Local Search Engine Academy located in a community near you.

Personalization of Search - New Solutions to the Imposed Challenges of Ranking

Once you have optimized any page, your log files will often show you
how people are finding that page. Not just what keywords they are
searching for to get there.

If you discover that people are using specific keyword phrases that
you had not originally thought of, it is in your best interest to
further explore those keywords. Try this keyword research tool to dig much deeper into actual Google Data.

Hint: More and more, you will discover that there is huge value in
knowing how to analyze your log files as opposed to focusing on
ranking reports the way you have in the past.

Why is that? Traditional ranking reports are becoming less and
less useful as the "personalization of search" grows in popularity.

Redifining Keyword Research Accuracy

Do you want something that works similarly only is not restricted to a limited database of limited Meta Crawler search results, but works directly with Google data.

There is no better source of data than from a search engine which at the time of this book’s writing has 67% of the search marketshare.

One of the newest tools for GREAT keyword research accuracy is so named SEO-Sniper.

• Uses a superior KEI scoring system
• Has the unique ability to cover entire ranges of words and phrases
directly from Google data.
• Literally checks a number of on page factor for the actual competing
pages for each phrase and forms a “difficulty score.”
• Takes into account the timing and magnitude of historical traffic
spike
• Allows you to sort the phrases any way you wish. By KEI, by
difficulty score and by PPC value.
• Also takes into account keyword phrase in the Title Tag, Link Text,
Body text and in Hi text too.
• Works with Google data (which has the largest market share) rather
than Metacrawler data from search engines like Dogpile.

Since this tool uses its scoring system to measure a variety of factors, it does take a while to run (because it’s measuring the top ranking pages) for as many phrases as you put in. I like to run it at night then look at the results in the morning.

Check out SEO Sniper which also has the benefit of being a desktop application instead of a recurring membership being required.

SEO Myth - Measuring SEO influences one at a time

SEO Myth – It is extremely important to research the exact keyword density, character count in the Title Tag, Meta Tag, Link text, Keyword prominence and Body text and link text by researching and testing each separate influential relevancy factor one-at-a-time.

Truth – Each SEO factor contributes (Google says they have 200 ranking signals,) but they cannot be measured accurately independently in isolation ( or one influence at a time.)

Why this is important to understand:
It is impossible to measure these influences truthfully and accurately by looking at each factor independently, because they all have a definite effect on each other. They must be measured together in a very specific way, if you don’t want conflicting results.

Also remember that it is impossible to measure SEO influences using Web site just made up of Gobeldygook place holder lettering.

You need to consider researching well crafted pages that read well to a human being and only then can you measure SEO truths using the right type of approach. Why is that? Because these days, search engines can understand the context of how a page is written using LSI and Artificial Intelligence.

SEO Myth - Rankings Are Dead

Myth – The most important thing about SEO is where you rank in the search results.

Truth – The most important thing about SEO for business is where you rank for what percentage of the most correct audience and for what percentage of time you rank there, plus you must have solid compelling reasons that will give visitors a reason to respond and take action on that page.

Why this is important to understand:
Rankings have not died in importance. They have changed a lot from what you might think of the traditional sense of ranking on a level of 1 to 10.

Now with personalization of search activated, traditional rankings can no longer be measured by traditional means.

Search engines are modifying the delivery of search results based on each users personal search history. Therefore, 3 users can search with the same keyword phrase at the very same computer and if their personalization is turned on each person could be served up completely different results based on each of their search history.

Top SEO Myth - Search Engine Submission is Beneficial

Myth – You must submit your Web site to the Search Engines, therefore you need to buy our services and we will submit your site to 30,000 search engines for only $29.95 per month. The misconception here is that a submission to a search engine through free add url is beneficial.

Truth - You are far better employing strategies that allow search engine robots to find your pages on their own (without submitting.)

Any company that bases their whole concept of traffic or SEO on submitting does not understand how search engines work themselves.

Why this is important to understand:
There is no valid reason to be using a submission service for search engines. It is still being offered today widespread because there are always new people coming online who have never been taught the value of letting a search engine find you on its own.

Top SEO Myth - Winning the War on the Search Engines

Myth –You are at war with the search engines to gain top rankings.

Therefore you must learn to do sneaky tricks to outsmart their algorithm. Therefore you must learn ways to beat the search engine to gain top visibility in search results. This whole pitch is a false concept.

Truth: - The truth is that you have never been at "war with the search engines." You are not required to "outsmart" or fool" the search engines at all to gain top visibility for your Web pages.

Why this is important to understand:
The only one you are truly competing with for visibility is your competitors, NOT the search engines.

The whole idea that you must "beat" the search engines or "outsmart" the search engines is a completely false concept. It plays well to the emotions and was probably dreamed up by some marketer years ago.

High KEI Observations for Affiliates with Recipe Sites

Welcome back to the business of high KEI observations from Wordtracker's member area.

Today I thought I'd dip in to see how many phrases with high KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) I could find in 3 or 4 minutes using my "Keyword Forensics" methods.

Typically if your KEI is 100 Wordtracker says it's a good phrase.
If your KEI is 400, Wordtracker says it's a excellent phrase.

But suppose you could find phrases with KEI in thousands or tens of thousands and do it in a few seconds? Okay, here we go.

But today, I am going to not use root words that include the term "recipe."

You may ask, "why not?" Because it is the first thing that jumps into your mind right? Most people tend to "guess" at keywords, rather than sift through all the data. Instead, I am going to choose a food group.

Here we go:

"how long to barbecue chicken" KEI 206.0 Compete 7 pages

"how do i bake a 5 lb whole chicken" KEI 441.0 Only 1 competing

"boneless and skinless chicken recipes" KEI 481.3 Only 3 competing

"how to cook chicken on a gas grill" KEI 645.0

"how long should you grill chicken" KEI 761.0

"how long to bake a whole chicken" KEI 841.0

"grilling time for chicken" KEI 912.2

"grilling temperature for chicken" KEI 1668.0

"oven baked whole chicken" KEI 1849.0

"how long to grill chicken wings" KEI 2,601.0

"what temperature should chicken be cooked at" KEI 6,667.0

"gas grill cooking time for chicken" KEI 8,281.0

"can i boil boneless skinless chicken breast" KEI 18,050.0

"how long do you cook chicken legs on the grill" KEI 21,780.0

"how long do you grill chicken on a gas grill" KEI 41,170.0

"how long do you bake chicken with bones" KEI 47,960.0

"how long do you bake chicken leg quarters" KEI 59,000.0

"ways to cook boneless skinless chicken breast" KEI 201,300.0

"how long does chicken keep in the refrigerator" KEI 210,300.0

"how long should chicken breast bake" KEI 216,500.0

5 SEO tips to get you started in 2009...

Here are 5 SEO tips just to get you started in 2009:

SEO TIP 1: Get for "customer focused" for 2009

For 2009 you need to focus on creating content that serves your
customers needs FIRST. Far too often, our focus is so narrowly
limited to just our own objectives for a Web page.

One powerful tip is to first research the specific needs of your
customer (within a niche) and then deliver up high value, based on
your research and give the searcher EXACTLY whatever it is that
THEY want, first.

Think about it - try it out and see what happens when you meet the
client's interest first, before introducing your own objective.
Does it work? You bet it does. Think behavioral research instead
of just "keyword research."

SEO TIP 2: Vast importance to working accurately with synonyms

Remember the importance of using semantically related supporting
words, (true synonyms,) descriptive verbs in your body content for
the future. As the industry continues to involve things like
the "personalization of search" and in 2009 these influences will
begin to have greater and greater impact, your going to see even
great rewards to visibility, for those who focus on writing and
communication excellence.

SEO TIP 3: Watch for new types of useful data to make available

One type of content to consider adding is "statistical data."
What is useful or of high interest to your target audience?

If the stats aren't your own, always indicate where you're
getting them. It's important to quote your source. But it may
be more than just numerical stats that attract new searchers.
Remember to do your research first to identify the best windows
of opportunity.

SEO TIP 4: How well can you interpret your customer's dialog to you

How important are your customers words to you?

Not just the words, but the exact dialog. You see sometimes, people
have a habit of speaking to you using certain terms and while we
understand their meaning - we may sometimes tend to substitute other
words of our own in recalling what was said.

There are great benefits to focus on communicating well and hearing
the dialog your customer uses as cues to doing behaviorally related
"keyword forensics." Synonyms can mean the same thing but may well
reveal somewhat different types of results.

SEO TIP 5: How to fine-tune all you know about SEO with greater
accuracy than ever before possible.

25 EASY tips to help you gain top visibility in the search engines

25 tips to help you gain top visibility in the search engines:

Tip 1. Enjoy better rankings by writing higher quality content.

Did you know Google is literally rewarding well-written content the benefit of "true relevancy." All I mean to say here, is that just by becoming a better "writer" and creating higher quality content, you can benefit from certain elements that are at work behind the scenes. Strive to write better content for your visitors and it will work for you not against you.

Tip 2. How well "focused" is your content for each page you are working on?

If you try to keep very focused on one topic per page, you will do much better than having multiple topics on the same page. If your page is specifically about the "benefits of using nostalgia" as a topical reference, are you actually using the keyword phrase for example "using nostalgia" within your readable HTML text? So many times, new students of SEO forget about the importance of focus.

Tip 3. Where is the best place to get started?

One of the best places to get started is by researching your target audience's search behavior. Ultimately, you want to target the exact phrases that your ideal buying audience is using when they search. Have you heard of SEO-Sniper?
(Not the Wordpress plug in but the newest keyword research tool)

Tip 4. Once you have got your keyword research done, you need to get started right away.

Some people are so completely overwhelmed that they put off actually getting started on their Web site for far too long.

Walt Disney put it simply like this:

"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing."
Walter Disney

Of course he was not speaking about SEO but the principle still applies. Why not make a list of strategies that you like to apply on your Web site, but then take one single item and work on it immediately, until it gets done. Sometimes even the simplest of changes have significant impact and I always feel badly when I see anyone taking to long to "get started."

Tip 5. Have you heard that "link building" is important?

Perhaps you've heard that link popularity and link reputation is important. It is important, but don't become so obsessed with linking that you build your entire strategy only "just around link building." You want to use all of the basic principles to carry your Web site through and you may want to do some linking based on the look of the "competitive landscape" for your keyword phrase.

You also want to build links based on what "makes sense" for your visitors.

Some search engines like Google give more weight to elements like link reputation which is an "off-page" influence while other search engines like Yahoo will give more weight to "on-page" influences such as your keyword phrase usage and how it is used on the page.

Tip 6. Have you read Google's Webmaster guidelines?

It is good to check it from time to time as things do get updated and are subject to change.

Tip 7. What is important to Yahoo?

What does Yahoo! say it wants in a Web page?
Original and unique content of genuine value Pages designed primarily for humans, with search engine considerations secondary Hyperlinks intended to help people find interesting, related content, when applicable

Metadata (including title and description) that accurately describes the contents of a web page and good web design in general

What 14 things does Yahoo! say it does "NOT" want in a Web page?

Find out all of their guidelines here:

Tip 8. What about researching important keyword phrases in other languages?
Are you wanting to perform keyword research in other languages?
What if you are trying to find keyword research suggestions for other languages such as Spanish or French or German? Now you can research keywords in several other languages including French, Dutch, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish and Spanish at Keyword Discovery.

Check out Keyword Discovery by clicking here.

Tip 9. For effective search engine marketing, you need more than just top rankings.

Remember to include strong calls to action to compel a response from the reader.

What do you want the reader to do once they finish reading your content? You need to clearly build these options into each page and leave nothing to guess work. Describe what action you would like them to take and never assume that they will just know what to do, because they won't act unless you spell it out.

Tip 10. SEO and Cascading Style Sheets.

An understanding of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) can help you with a number of SEO work-arounds to meet challenges with complicated design issues. W3Schools provides an excellent CSS tutorial free of charge, complete with a lot of examples and quizzes.

Tip 11. Don't ever limit the search engines to only just one way of finding your pages.

Put links to new pages on your site map. Make sure you link to your site map from every page of your Web site.

If there's a corresponding page on your site that you can use to link to the new page, do so. Mention the new page on your blog. Do you have a directory associated with the particular topic dealing with the content of this new page? Add a link on that page. Just make sure that you give the search engines multiple ways to find all of your important pages.

Tip 12. How compelling are your Meta descriptions?

Are you remembering to use your important keyword phrase in the description?

Are you taking time to write unique descriptions for each of your pages?

How about a call to action?

Are you remembering to include good calls to action in your description?

Tip 13. Have you tried Fagan Finder?

This Web site has over 100 tools that you can use to dig for information on a URL. There are more nooks and crannies to this site than you can possibly imagine.

Tip 14. Do not obsess over Google Page Rank.

Did you know that a page with a high PageRank can be out ranked in the SERPs by a page with a lower PageRank? Remember that PageRank isn't the "end all" in SEO. It's only one piece of the pie.

Tip 15. Don't forget to use your keyword phrase in ALT text.

ALT text should be used only to describe images. Putting keywords in the the Alt tag to try and influence even a marginal advantage is a waste of time. Don't do it. Use every tag for the purpose in which is was specifically designed to be used by the W3C.

Tip 16. Create content that serves your customer's needs FIRST and your own needs second.

Far too often, our focus is so narrowly limited to just our own objectives for a Web page. One powerful tip is to first research the specific needs of your customer (within a niche) and then deliver up high value, based on your research and give the searcher EXACTLY whatever it is that THEY want, first.

Think about it - try it out and see what happens when you meet the client's interest first, before introducing your own objective.

Tip 17. Are you using your researched primary keyword phrase prominently in your Title Tag?

The Title Tag of your Web page is still extremely influential for relevancy in most search engines. Try using your researched phrase once, up front in your Title and remember the value of creating a compelling Title that engages the reader. Avoid stuffing your Title full of keywords and instead create a compelling Title that reads well and accents a benefit.

Tip 18. Remember that most major search engines no longer look at the your Meta keyword tag when determining relevancy.

Use moderation and be careful not to over-use any single word multiple times in your keyword Meta tag. Try and use approximately a half dozen words that are actually being used within the Web page content.

Tip 19. Do not use the same Title tags, Meta Keyword Tags and Description Tag on every page of your Web site.

Keep your Title, Keywords and Description all specific to the individual page you are working on, unless you want to get falsely flagged for duplicate content penalties.

Tip 20. Remember to use alternative synonyms sometimes instead of over using keywords.

Your Thesaurus can be your best friend or else watch this video on how you can choose semantically related keywords with the help of Wordtracker's Full Search tool.

Tip 21. Check out Robin Nobles list of 148 muscle words you can use on your Web site

Here is Robin's list of muscle or power words you can print out or save to your hard drive, words you can use on your site in your title and description tags along with your keyword phrase, and in your heading tags and your content.

Tip 22. Create content that deserves to be found within the top ranks.

One of the single most important aspects to managing your time well, is to stay focused on creating high value, original content that is useful and engaging to your visitors. What kind of content should your Web site contain?

Create content that is truly relevant (and honestly deserves to be found at the top.)Create content that serves your customer's needs FIRST and your own needs second. Create content that will meet your visitor's exact search query and satisfy it. Create content your visitor will be GLAD that they found - something of true merit.
Create content that is based on real "behaviorally based research" rather than guessing at keywords. Create content that is written for your specific visitor so that it flows smoothly and reads well to them. Create content that is original and you can feel proud to have created. Create content that has a solid, well written "call to action." Create content that is based on what a "search engine understands" through artificial intelligence (AI.)

Tip 23. Are you interested in learning how to gauge your Web site accurately and process all of the changes you need to know regardless of how competitive a keyword phrase is? Do you want to examine all of the opportunities for you to advance in visibility in the minimal number of moves? Do you want to protect your visibility by understanding who might be approaching behind you?
Here is a tool that can do an outstanding job of reporting and analytics of your exact search landscape plus tell you about all the strengths and weaknesses of your top competitors too.
Visit SEO Recon.

Tip 24. Don't forget to use optimization with your press releases.
Have you thought about optimizing some news about your business this week? You can put your news story out in front of thousands of publishers and editors through the PRweb service.

But the question is - what will your unique story angle be?

There are so many times we get so wrapped up in what our competitor is doing, we seem to forget the power and impact of taking a reverse or opposite approach.

Learn how to tell your story from a different and more interesting perspective than everyone else and your stories. Catch your audience by surprise with some genuine news and make your news story stand out in the eyes of publishers. Surprise your audience with a different approach and watch the impact it can have on your Web site. Its only news, but people love fresh ideas or a story told from an alternate approach.

Tip 25. Are you trying to increase the frequency of robot visits to your Web site?

Are you aware of the value of fresh, original content added to your Web site on a consistent basis? Of course you are.

Does it really improve the findability of your Web site? You bet it does and it increases the frequency of the Spider visits too.

Highest regards,
John Alexander

The best formula to use is creative thinking and brainstorming with someone as a brainstorming partner. You need someone you can trust and someone who is good at brainstorming. As you fashion certain ideas, you want to allow yourself the liberty to believe that literally, anything is possible.

Dream big, for your new business.
